Definition

Under a supervisory officer in a state department, institution, hospital or clinic, supervises the work of the x-ray unit and, as required, operates x-ray equipment; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Gives instructions to employees of the unit and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Supervises the operation, adjustment, maintenance and minor repair of the x-ray equipment used in radiograph examinations and treatment.
  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Utilizes and supervises the use of traditional and/or digital x-ray equipment and supplies.
  • May supervises the preparation of solutions and the development of x-ray plates and films and the mounting of dental and other films on mounts for the development contingent on the type of equipment in use.
  • Supervises the preparation of solutions and the development of x-ray plates and films and the mounting of dental and other films on mounts.
  • Supervises the preparation of schedules used in radiographic examinations and treatments.
  • May supervise the steps taken to prepare patients for radiographic examinations and treatments.
  • Sees that necessary equipment is clean and orderly.
  • Prepares and supervises in the preparation of reports and records of treatments, pictures, and other factual records and reports of the unit.
  • Sees that prescribed measures are taken to insure the welfare and safety of patients and the employees of the x-ray unit.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in x-ray examination and treatment work.

License

Applicants must possess a current, valid license as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (LRT)(R) issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation of x-ray apparatus used in making radiographic examinations and in giving treatments.
  • Knowledge of the procedures and materials used in preparing solutions and in developing x-ray plates and films.
  • Knowledge of the precautions to be taken to avoid the harmful effects of the rays both to the patient and to the operator.
  • Ability to operate and supervise the operation, maintenance, adjustment and minor repair of the x-ray apparatus used in making radiographic examinations and treatments.
  • Ability to supervise the preparation of solutions and the developing of x-ray plates and films.
  • Ability to supervise the mounting of x-ray films and plates.
  • Ability to prepare treatment schedules.
  • Ability to see that the necessary equipment is maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Ability to see that proper safety measures are observed.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports and supervise the maintenance of essential files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
