Definition

Under supervision , of a supervisor in a state department, institution, or agency, performs bookkeeping tasks and other simple, routine, repetitive clerical work; does other related duties.

Examples of work

Maintains double entry bookkeeping records involving making entries in journals and posting to ledgers and other records. Maintains records of receipts and disbursements which include petty cash. Reconciles bank accounts. Balances and adjusts accounts and prepares trial balances. May collect and compile data for inclusion in budget requests, financial statements, and other reports. May maintain budgetary accounts. May determine accounts to which orders and vouchers are charged or to be charged .May use varied types of common office machines in temporary assignments where skill and speed are not primary requirements and special training is not necessary. Makes calculations and extensions. Maintains records and files. In the Department Human Services, may be required to undergo fire training classes. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Ability to organize assigned bookkeeping and other related work and to develop effective work methods. Ability to perform bookkeeping tasks, including the calculation of percentages and discounts, the posting of entries in ledgers, cash books, journals, and other records, the maintenance of a double entry set of books, the preparation of trial balances, and the reconciliation of bank accounts after a period of training. Ability to compile data and the prepare financial and other reports and statements. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
