Definition

Under direction of an Affirmative Action Officer or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency performs assigned paraprofessional functions in connection with the various phases of affirmative action programming; does other related duties. Examples of work

As directed, assists in compiling and analyzing statistical data pertinent to affirmative action program planning. Assists in developing systems for retrieval and dissemination of information. Maintains a resume bank of minorities and females and assists in required recruitment activities. Prepares reports on personnel actions for submission to appropriate agencies. Assists employees in the processing of complaints of discrimination and maintains a disposition log of complaints. Provides information to employees on affirmative action program status. Assists in training activities for the purpose of orientation and upward mobility. Assists in special studies which may be used as support to modify the affirmative action programs. Acts as liaison between EEO office and data processing units. Assists in the design of reporting forms for affirmative action plan and EEO implementation. Assists in the revision or establishment of job specifications to eliminate artificial barriers. Maintains a resource library on affirmative action and EEO material. Prepares responses to inquiries. Drafts correspondence. May perform various support tasks associated with the work. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree (60 semester hour credits).

Experience

One (1) year of experience in the performance of technical support functions relating to affirmative action and/or personnel and equal employment opportunity. NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience as indicated on a year-for-year basis.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of the functions of an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office. Knowledge of the methods used to compile and analyze data. Ability to read and interpret laws, rules and regulations and apply them to specific situations. Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods. Ability to prepare statistical and other reports. Ability to maintain records, files, and resource libraries. Ability to assist employees in the completion of required forms for complaints. Ability to assist in the training of employees. Ability to draft correspondence. Ability to deal effectively with employees. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
