Examples of work

• When assigned to the N.J. Turnpike, Garden State Parkway or Atlantic City Expressway, patrols an assigned portion of the roadway and is responsible for investigating motor vehicle accidents and enforcing the motor vehicle laws.
• Assists disabled motorists, also investigates and complaints from motorists, patrons at restaurants or service stations.
• Occasionally may be assigned to station record "desk" duty.
• Makes arrests for any violations of the criminal laws that he observes such as possession of stolen vehicles, untaxed alcohol, narcotics, concealed weapons etc.
• May also be assigned to radar or traffic task force duty.
• When assigned to a barracks within a Troop, performs all or most of the police duties' described in "DEFINITION" as required. Does related work as required.
• May also be designated an Investigator and would be responsible for conducting criminal investigations within the station area.
• When assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section in a Troop as an Investigator, conducts investigations complaints and matters as assigned. .
• Types reports and prepares cases for presentation to courts.
• Processes and preserves evidence as required and does other related work.
• May be assigned as Identification Man and as, such specializes in photographing crime and fatal accident scenes.
• Checks crime scenes for latent fingerprints and other physical evidence. Dusts for Intent fingerprints and photographs and "lifts" them as required. Frequently testifies in court as an expert.
• When assigned to a Traffic Section within the Troop, may be required to serve on a radar team enforcing speeding and other motor vehicle laws.
• If assigned to a truck weigh detail, weighs trucks either on portable or platform scales and issues summonses to violators. Also checks trucks for height, length and width violations.
• May also be assigned as a drunkometer coordinator and is responsible for monthly checks of drunkometers including titrating of the acid used in the. Testifies in most contested drinking driving cases as an expert. May be assigned to the traffic task force and be required to vigorously enforce the motor vehicle laws in areas of high accident frequency.
• May be assigned to the Safety Education Bureau within a Troop. Sets up school safety programs, safety poster contents, etc. Visits all schools periodically and instruct students assigned to crossing guard duties. Gives talks and exhibits films on safety and any other matter relating to State Police that may be assigned to him, before school groups, civic groups, clubs and any other requesting agency.
• May be assigned to a Troop Logistics Bureau and assists the Supply Sergeant in preparing the Troop annual budget request, drawing supplies from the Division Logistics Bureau and distributing them to Troop Barracks. Maintains inventories of stationary supplies, household and cleaning equipment, automotive parts and equipment, and is responsible for keeping an adequate supply on hand. Assists the Supply Sergeant in maintaining and accounting for all riot equipment issued to the Troop.
• When assigned to the Intelligence Bureau at Division Headquarters conducts investigations and obtains information for the files concerning members of the LaCosaNostra families (Mafia). May also be assigned to the Electronic Surveillance Unit (Wiretap), and as such must possess the knowledge and ability to handle the equipment involved.
• When assigned to the Planning, Research and Computer Bureau, would be responsible for establishing computer programs and other related matters or supervise civilian employees performing these duties.
• When assigned to the Public Information Bureau, would be engaged in all areas of public relations and disseminating information to the various mass media. Must also have the ability to take photographs and prepare material for the Division Annual Report, the Division internal publication (The Triangle) and other similar publications.
• When assigned to the Teletype Unit of the Communications Bureau, is responsible for the proper transmitting, receiving and routing of all teletype messages. In addition, receives telephone calls and takes messages relating to the Communications Bureau and properly replies to them or disposes of them. When working the 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. shifts, supervises civilian teletype operators in the performance of their duties.
• When assigned to the Community Relations Unit and designated as Investigator, lectures and speaks to both police and civilian groups on police-community relations. Also checks with police departments in cities that have potential civil or racial disorders and reports this information to Division Headquarters. Does other related work as required.
• When assigned to the Uniform Crime Reporting Unit, Court Disposition Reporting Unit or Firearms Investigation Unit, conducts seminars for briefing of local police and other officials involved in the entire process of the administration of criminal justice.
• Periodically visits all police departments or courts as required and assists them with any problems that may develop in the reporting system.
• When assigned to the National Crime Information Center receives requests for "look-ups" on suspected stolen vehicles, stolen property, wanted and missing persons. Obtains necessary information via teletype from the computer in the NCIC Headquarters in Washington, D.C. When working other than regular business hours, supervises a civilian teletype operator in the performance of his duties.
• When assigned to the Ballistics Unit, performs various types of examinations of firearms, bullets or cartridges submitted as evidence in criminal matters. Frequently testifies in court as an expert. In addition, makes minor repairs to service revolvers for Division Personnel.
• When assigned to the Document-Voiceprint Unit, makes examinations of questionable documents to ascertain if they are forged. Also compares typewritten documents which are submitted as evidence with typewriters in an attempt to identify the writer of extortion letters and similar correspondence. Also is required to perform the duties of a handwriting expert or identify persons who make threatening or annoying telephone calls through the use of a voiceprint. May be required to testify in court as an expert.
• When assigned to the Organized Crime Task Force Bureau, investigates all suspected organized crime, loan sharking, truck hijacking and other similar matters.
• When assigned to the Polygraph Unit, examines suspects in criminal cases on the polygraph (lie detector). May be required to testify in court as an expert.
• When assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, conducts investigations into criminal matters, subversive activities or automobile theft as required.
• When assigned to the Narcotics Bureau, investigates the sale or use of narcotics, barbiturates, hallucinogenics and other habit producing drugs. Must frequently perform in an "undercover" capacity and infiltrate or gain the confidence of narcotics users or "pushers". Frequently must purchase narcotics as evidence before an arrest can be made.
• When assigned to the Helicopter Patrol Bureau, will perform the duties of pilot. Will be primarily used to patrol Interstate Highways. In addition, will be used for transporting dignitaries, evacuating people from disaster scenes, searching for lost persons or fugitives, observing scenes of riots and civil disorders and other related duties.
• When assigned to the Governmental Security Bureau in the State House, is responsible for the safety and security of all the State owned buildings in the State House complex and all of their employees. In addition, while the Governor is at the State House they are responsible for his safety. They may also be assigned to Morven, the Governor's mansion and are responsible for the safety and security of the Governor and his family while they are there. They also conducts tours of school groups into the State House, provide security for both houses of the legislature while in session, enforce parking regulations and direct traffic in the vicinity of the State House
• When assigned to the Fatal Accident Unit, they re-investigate all fatal motor vehicle accidents investigated by municipal police departments and submit their findings and recommendations to the Driver Improvement Section of the Division of Motor Vehicles for possible action against driver's licenses.
• When assigned to the Training Bureau, they perform the function of Instructor in the State Police Recruit Academy, Municipal Police Academy or the Special Training Bureau which includes Operation Combine and a tactical course. Are responsible for developing and up-dating lesson plans for the subjects they will teach.
• May also be assigned to the Underwater Recovery Unit as a Scuba Diver, as a Drunkometer or Breathalyzer operator, as a Radiological Monitoring Operator, as a Rifleman or Anti-Sniper Search Man or as a member of a Crowd Control Unit.
