Definition
Under direction of a supervisory official in a state institution or agency, operates and maintains the machinery and equipment used in the sewage disposal plant; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Takes the lead in assigned sewage disposal plant work and develops a work program and working procedures for a small group engaged in the routine operation of the plant.
- Assigns and instructs individuals, employees, and patients assigned to sewage disposal plant work.
- Personally operates, adjusts, regulates, and maintains chemical feed machines, chlorinators, sludge digestion pumps, flowmeters, and other mechanical equipment.
- Checks and adjusts the flow and level in the varied tanks and sludge chambers.
- Takes the lead in the work involved in the cleaning of bar screens, removing of sludge from drying beds, cleaning and adjusting of filter bed spraying nozzles, disposing of waste, and maintenance of the area in a sanitary condition.
- Makes periodic qualitative and quantitative chemical tests to determine the amount of acidity, alkalinity, chlorine residual, and relative stability, and the settling of solids and interprets results; makes adjustments based on this interpretation.
- Makes frequent tests of the effluent to determine its character and to enable it to meet the requirements of state and local laws, and regulations.
- Takes periodic readings of the flowmeters, pressure gauges, gas meters, thermometers, and other recording apparatus.
- Requisitions, stores, safeguards, and supervises the proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- In the Department of Human Services or Corrections, may be required to take the lead in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment used in sewage and water treatment plants, and take measures required to ensure their safety, custody, welfare, and work progress.
- Prepares daily sewage reports.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- In the Department of Human Services or Corrections may be required to undergo fire training classes.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience involving the operation and maintenance of electric pumps, motors, and other sewage disposal equipment and machinery.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems, procedures, and methods used in developing a work program and working procedures for a group of workers engaged in operating and maintaining a sewage disposal plant.
- Knowledge of theories, procedures, equipment, machinery, and devices used in operations, adjusting, regulating, and maintaining chemical feed machines and other sewage plant machinery.
- Knowledge of methods used in doing work involved in the cleaning of bar screens, removing of sludge from drying beds, cleaning and adjusting of filter bed spraying nozzles, and in maintaining the sewage disposal plant areas in a sanitary condition.
- Ability to operate, adjust, regulate, and maintain chemical feed machine chlorinators, sludge digestion pumps, flowmeters, and other sewage disposal mechanical equipment.
- Ability to check and adjust the flow and levels in tanks and chambers.
- Ability to see that screens and beds are cleaned and that filter bed nozzles are properly maintained.
- Ability to see that plant areas are maintained in an orderly, safe, and sanitary condition.
- Ability to make qualitative and quantitative chemical tests.
- Ability to interpret the results and make adjustments based on these interpretations.
- Ability to determine whether effluents from the plant conform to state and local laws and regulations.
- Ability to perform the accompanying clerical and record keeping work.
- Ability to prepare periodic reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
