Definition
Under direction of a Head Sewing Worker or other supervisor in a state institution under the jurisdiction of the Department of Human Services or in a school under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education, does general sewing and mending of clothing and linens; does other related duties as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Examples of work
Lays out, cuts, and sews gowns, bibs, diapers, towels, table cloths, sheets, aprons, laundry bags, pillow cases, camisoles, mitts, tray covers, doctor's gowns, scarves, and other articles by hand or by machine. Marks patient's and employee's clothing prior to laundering. Alters patterns. Makes buttonholes. Operates electrically and manually operated sewing machines to mend and alter clothing and linens of all types. Maintains records. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the cutting out, sewing, alteration, and repair of clothing and linens. NOTE: Successful completion of a course in the use of power sewing machines and other power machines and techniques in a approved vocational high school may be substituted for the indicated experience.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of problems and processes involved in laying patterns on cloth, making alterations in patterns, and cutting out garments and linens. Ability to use, adjust, and make minor repairs to sewing machines, cutters, buttonhole machines, and other equipment. Ability to estimate the probable quantities of materials and time required for specific sewing projects. Ability to keep sewing areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
