Definition
Under direction of a supervisor in a State institution, has charge of the activities of employees, patients, and/or inmates assigned to the sewing room; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Provides suitable assignments and instructions to the employees, patients and/or inmates assigned to sewing activities, and supervises the performance of their work.
- Completes and supervises the work involved in laying out patterns, making necessary alterations, and in cutting out and sewing garments, linens; and other articles.
- Makes, alters, and repairs linens and clothing of varied types.
- Trains employees and others in sewing, altering, and mending work.
- Inspects finished work.
- Sees that production schedules are met.
- Makes estimates of the personnel, equipment, quantities of materials, and time required for specific projects.
- Sees that the sewing areas are maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Maintains records of materials used, time spent, completed work, and other essential records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience as a sewing worker which shall have included responsibility for cutting out, sewing and altering garments and linens.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems and processes involved in laying patterns on cloth and cutting out garments and linens, and mending.
- Knowledge of the proper use, maintenance, and minor adjustment and repair of sewing machinery.
- Knowledge of the problems in altering patterns and the fitting and alteration of garments.
- Ability to estimate quantities and costs and to plan, organize, and carry out work assignments in order to meet production schedules.
- Ability to provide suitable assignments and instructions to employees and patients, provide assistance when problems arise, and review their work for conformance with reasonable standards of workmanship and output.
- Ability to make, alter, and repair garments and linens of all types.
- Ability to supervise sewing, alteration and repair projects.
- Ability to make the required minor adjustments and repairs to sewing machines, cutters and other equipment.
- Ability to prepare and keep records of materials on hand and future requirements as well as production, time and other records.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Note
Successful completion of a course in the use of power sewing machines and other power machines and techniques in an approved vocational high school may be substituted for one (1) year of the indicated experience.
