CREW SUPERVISOR SIGNS

Definition

Under the direction of a Supervisor of Highway sign Operations , or other supervisory officer in the Department of Transportation, supervises the work performed by Sign Shop employees engaged in the fabrication, reconditioning, installation, replacement and repair of traffic signs; including sign support structures, painting, lettering, and application of reflective letters and materials to all types of highway signs; supervises the production of all types of highway signs utilized by the Department; supervises staff and work activities. Prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Supervises the production and complex fabrication, repair and installation of highway signs of all types.
• Provides assignments and instructions to staff engaged in the fabrication installation repair, replacement, painting, lettering, and application of reflective letters and materials to all types of highway signs and supervises their work.
• Supervises in the assembly and disassembly of signs and their structures including ground mounts, cantilevers, overheads, and bridge mounts.
• Prepares requisitions for equipment, materials, and supplies; maintains inventory of all stock.
• Supervises and participates in the layout and fabrication of signs.
• Supervises and participates in the painting of highway signs and in hand lettering, stenciling, silk screening, and the application of reflective sheeting.
• Performs and supervises the mixing, matching, and blending of paints and enamels used to paint signs.
• Supervises the storage and shipment of fabricated signs.
• Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
• May be required, to perform work associated with the fabrication, reconditioning, installation, replacement and repair of highway signs; including sign support structures, painting, lettering, and application of reflective letters and materials to all types of highway signs.
• Prepares reports of materials used, time spent, and work completed.
• Will be required to perform various types of emergency work after regular work hours, within the established rate code for the level and type of work.
• Performs snow removal and ice control work at any time of day or night as required.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in the assembly, installation, replacement, reconditioning and repair of highway signs, including sign support structures; and the fabrication, reconditioning and assembly of highway signs utilizing large-scale production techniques; two (2) years which shall have been in a lead worker capacity.

<b>LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:</b>

Appointees must possess and maintain a current certification as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator issued by the New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used to fabricate highway signs composed of wood, metal, plastic or in combinations thereof.
• Knowledge of the Department of Transportation regulations, policies, standards, and procedures as applied to sign work.
• Knowledge of the methods used to prepare surfaces for painting.
• Knowledge of the methods and materials used to paint signs, and to mix, match and blend paints.
• Knowledge of the Standard Highway Signs Manual.
• Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
• Ability to supervise workers in performing the fabrication, installation, repair of various highway sign and sign support structures.
• Ability to supervise the work performed from an aerial platform truck or similar equipment, up to a height of 75 feet, and to fabricate, erect, and recondition signs, support structures and effect repairs.
• Ability to organize highway sign construction work and develop appropriate work methods.
• Ability to provide assignments and instruction to employees and evaluate their performance.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations, including snow removal and ice control.
• Ability to mix, blend, match, use, and store paints.
• Ability to hand letter signs.
• Ability to design and supervise fabrication of various highway signs.
• Ability to use the silk screen process in sign painting.
• Ability to supervise the carpentry work involved in Sign Shop activities.
• Ability to supervise the application of reflective methods to various types of highway signs.
• Ability to obtain, safeguard, distribute, record, and supervise the proper use of equipment and materials.
• Ability to prepare daily reports of time, personnel, cost, and equipment.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
