Examples of work
- Responsible for all of the work involved in the painting of bridges and structures on the State highway system and in political subdivisions when required, including the scheduling of contract and force account work and supervision of the Statewide bridge painting crew.
- Aides in the preparation of a priority list of bridge rehabilitation projects for both maintenance and betterment improvements, including cost estimates for repair and rehabilitation.
- Reviews consulting engineers' bridge inspection reports and makes recommendations for the course of constructive action to be taken, both force account and by contract.
- Works with engineers and recommends maintenance priority repairs.
- Provides technical assistance to field maintenance personnel on regular and emergency repairs to bridge structures.
- Consults with the Bureau of Structural Design in preparing plans and specifications for bridge repairs by contract.
- Handles claims pertaining to bridges by making estimates of damage and depreciation.
- Together with representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, inspects bridges selected by them for in-depth inspection.
- Consults with the Bureau of Structural Design on recommendations for posting of load limits on existing structures.
- Reviews for the accumulation of data, preparation, and updating the Maintenance Bridge Book and other inventories.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Requisitions, issues, and supervises the proper use of materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Supervises the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- <b>REQUIREMENTS
- Experience</b>
- Five years of experience in the construction and maintenance of bridges and highway structures, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Wide knowledge of highway and bridge construction procedures, materials, methods and problems.
- Ability to acquire wide knowledge of the bridges and structures along the State highway system and on the Delaware and Raritan Canal and Feeder.
- Wide knowledge of the problems involved in supervising construction and maintenance work on highway and canal systems which are geographically scattered.
- Ability to organize assigned supervisory construction, maintenance and repair work and develop effective work methods, utilizing the Maintenance Management System.
- Ability to make surveys and estimates of maintenance and repair work to be done and to prepare detailed reports thereof for the Bureau Chief regarding potential work projects.
- Ability to prepare annual estimates of the probable amounts and types of labor, equipment, material, and supplies to be required to carry on the work of the unit.
- Ability to make the necessary checks and inspections of work in process and completed, and provide detailed reports on completions and as-builts.
- Ability to requisition, issue, and supervise the proper use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
