Definition

Under the supervision of the Crew Supervisor, Maintenance, PIP, Palisades Interstate Park Commission, helps to supervise the work of maintaining and improving the physical condition of the Park areas: does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Helps to supervise and train Heavy Equipment Operators, Repairer, Maintenance Workers I and II, and seasonal employees in park maintenance work.
• May independently supervise work crews in locations away from other supervisors, or be assigned complete supervision of maintenance crews for several months at a time.
• Supervises the use and application of chemicals for ornamental and turf pest control.
• Maintains employee time sheets and overtime records.
• Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the firing, hiring, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
• Assists in supervising and does the repairing of plumbing, electrical wiring, fences, fire places, grills, roofs, tables, benches, playground equipment, and other property of the Park.
• Helps to supervise and does the clearing and maintaining of trails, wood cutting, grass cutting, cleaning of forest and/or Park area, disposing of trash, controlling of erosion, and the building of fire lines.
• Helps to supervise and does the building and repairing of dams, bridges, septic tanks, drains, walks, and parking areas.
• Supervises and does painting, masonry work, planting, transplanting, and trimming as required.
• Supervises and personally performs the work involved in maintaining turf areas, including seeding, fertilizing, mowing and spraying,
• Assists in supervising snow removal operations and the de-icing of roads.
• Oversees the cutting and removal of trees and brush and the removal of litter, garbage and debris.
• Assigns equipment to groups and gives instruction in the proper use and care of materials, seeds, plants and nursery stock and equipment, including top soil, top dressings, niches, fertilizers and spraying materials.
• Assists in making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
• Operates and supervises the operation of power equipment including power shovels, trucks and snowplows.
• Prepares simple factual reports of employee time, costs, materials, and work assigned and completed.
• May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee ability, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Basic knowledge of the methods used in maintaining landscaped areas and roadside areas.
• Basic knowledge of the materials, equipment, operations and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical wiring, fences, fire places, grills, roofs, tables, benches, playground equipment, and other buildings.
• Ability to help supervise and take the lead in the work involved in maintaining and improving park areas.
• Ability to take the lead in a group of Heavy Equipment Operators, Repairers and Maintenance Workers I and II engaged in clearing trails, cutting wood, mowing grass, clearing forest and park areas, disposing of trash, controlling erosion, and building fire lines.
• Ability to take the lead in a group of Repairers, Maintenance Workers I and II and engaged in repairing plumbing, electrical wiring, fences, fire places, grills, roofs, tables, benches, playground equipment and other Park property.
• Ability to help supervise the building, and repair of dams, bridges, septic tanks, drains, -walks and parking areas.
• Ability to take the lead in painting, masonry work, planting, transplanting, trimming and other work, including the maintenance of turf areas, seeding, fertilizing, spraying and mowing.
