Definition
Under the direction of a Master Mechanic or other supervisory officer in a State Department, Institution or Agency, does varied tasks involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of varied types of non-automotive equipment; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- In the shop and in the field performs maintenance and repairs on varied types of non-automotive equipment such as laundry, laboratory, kitchen and cannery equipment, washers, dryers, mangles, presses, extractors, sterilizers, ranges, sheet folders, compressors, hot water generators, fans and motors, pumps, mixers, sprayers and general farm buildings and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Inspects and determines the nature of difficulties and malfunctioning and takes necessary action to restore equipment to good operating order.
- Overhauls equipment and installs new bearings, gears, valves, seals, linkages and other parts as may be required.
- Makes adjustments using testing equipment and other methods.
- Repairs and installs assemblies and sub-assemblies.
- Disassembles equipment, assemblies and sub-assemblies as may be required to correct defects.
- Maintains preventative maintenance schedules for inspecting, lubricating, cleaning and servicing equipment.
- Orders or requisitions all parts and materials for repairs or replacement.
- Assists in the installation of various machinery.
- Changes oil and lubricates motors and equipment.
- Changes and maintains storage batteries.
- Does welding of broken parts and simple black smithing tasks as may be required.
- Keeps work area clean and in a safe condition.
- Rebuilds varied kinds of motors.
- Obtains, stores, records, safeguards and properly uses equipment, materials and supplies.
- Prepares factual reports.
- Keeps the essential records of time spent, materials used and work completed.
- In the Departments of Human Services and Corrections, may be required to undergo fire training classes.
- In the Department of Corrections, may be required to act as Team Leader and provide appropriate on-site work assignments to a group of assigned inmates.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of non-automotive equipment which includes the repair and maintenance of electrical motors and motorized machines and equipment.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of varied types of motors and their operation.
- Knowledge of the common reasons for mechanical failure and the steps necessary to correct malfunctioning.
- Knowledge of the diagnostic and repair tools and equipment used in dissembling mechanical equipment, in repairing and adjusting motors and mechanical equipment and installing new parts and their proper use and care.
- Knowledge of the installation, maintenance and repair of different types of non-automotive equipment and appliances such as laundry, laboratory, kitchen and cannery equipment, washers, dryers, manglers, presses, extractors, sterilizers, ranges, sheet folders, compressors, hot water generators, fans and motors, mixers, sprayer and general farm building and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to analyze mechanical problems, organize assigned maintenance and repair work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to do mechanical work in the garage and in the field on non-automotive equipment and machines.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and take those measures needed to correct malfunctioning and to replace work and defective parts.
- Ability to rebuild and install new and/or rebuilt assemblies in equipment.
- Ability to prepare reports of time spent, cost, materials used, and work completed.
- Ability to weld broken parts and perform simple black smithing tasks as may be required.
- Ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals, using diagram schematics and parts manual.
- Ability to maintain the essential records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
