Definition

Under the direction of a supervisor in a State Department or agency, supervises a group of Machinists and other employees involved in making and repairing parts for equipment and machinery; prepares or works from sketches, plans and specifications; works with tools, gauges, fixtures and machinery common to the trade. Supervises staff and work activities. Prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Inspects and determines the extent and type of work to be completed.
• Provides assignments and instructions to a group of Machinists and other employees of the unit and supervises their work performance.
• Supervises and takes the lead in the making of parts for automobiles, trucks, snow plows, concrete mixers, lawn mowers, shop machines, bridge equipment and other types of road building and maintenance equipment.
• Supervises and takes the lead in the grinding and fitting of semi-finished pistons, the fitting and installation of new piston rings and writ pins; and the fitting of new main and connecting rod bearings.
• Supervises and takes the lead in the operation of lathes, planners, shapers, milling machines, grinders, power hacksaws, drill presses boring equipment and other specialized machines.
• Supervises and takes the lead in machining worn shafts, gears, pistons and crank shafts, in the re-bushing of bearings, the re-boring of cylinders and engines and in the assembling and finishing of tools and equipment required in experimental work.
• Prepares reports and maintains records of personnel, time, materials used, cost and work completed.
• Supervises and takes the lead in the rebuilding of all types of gasoline and/or diesel engines, the operation of valve re-facing machines, the grinding of valves and valve seats and the rebuilding of all types of water pumps, oil pumps and other sub-assemblies.
• Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
• Supervises the storage, use and safeguarding of supplies; tools, materials and equipment.
• Supervises staff and takes the lead in the repair and maintenance of elevators, dishwashers, kitchen machines, laundry machines, bakery equipment, boiler room pumps and engines, cable cars, lawn mowers, farm and garden machinery, dairy equipment, shop equipment and machines.
• Supervises and takes the lead in the oiling, cleaning and installation of new equipment.
• When required, provides instruction to inmates in the repair and maintenance of institution machines and equipment and takes the measures required to insure their safety, custody, welfare and work progress.
• Prepares reports and records of personnel, time, materials, supplies, costs and work completed.
• May be required to undergo fire-training courses.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in work involving the set up and operation of lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, shapers and/or other specialized machines and tools used in machine shop work.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used to make parts for automotive vehicles, highway maintenance machinery and equipment and kitchen, laundry and bakery machinery.
• Knowledge of the methods used to operate lathes, shapers, drill presses, milling machines, planners and other similar machinery.
• Ability to supervise assigned staff and plan, organize and implement projects within the unit.
• Ability to analyze assigned machine shop work and develop an orderly work plan.
• Ability to provide assignments and instructions to Machinists and others working in a machine shop.
• Ability to operate lathes, drilling machines, grinders, drill press and other related machines.
• Ability to interpret blue prints and work from sketches and drawings.
• Ability to order, store, safeguard, record and supervise the use of equipment, materials, tools, and supplies.
• Ability to maintain records of equipment, materials and supplies used, time spent, work completed and costs.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
