Examples of work
- Plans for and evaluates the effective utilization of available funds, personnel, equipment, materials and supplies.
- Assigns and instructs employees and inmates in the laundry operation and supervises work performance.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Submits recommendations to administrative and supervisory staff regarding the handling, delivery and storage of laundry at the various institutions within the designated area.
- Supervises the preparation of requisitions for all laundry supplies, preparations, equipment and material to be acquired by direct purchase and sees that these are properly stored, safeguarded, recorded, and utilized.
- Ensures proper health, sanitary and safety conditions and standards; inspects all areas where laundry supplies are received handled and stored.
- Supervises, coordinates and reviews all schedules and programs for the handling of laundry.
- Prepares factual reports and makes recommendations to the Business Manager or other supervisory officer concerning the operation of the regional laundry.
- Makes recommendations regarding the selection of suitable clothing, linen and fabrics, giving consideration to institutional program objectives and the regional laundry program.
- Prepares budget requests regarding the appropriation of staff, equipment and supplies.
- Prepares reports and maintains and supervises the maintenance of files and records.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- <b>REQUIREMENTS
- Experience</b>
- Seven years of experience in institutional, industrial, or hotel housekeeping and linen control procedures; two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity
- Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute a Bachelors degree in home economics, hotel administration or associated field for four years of the non-supervisory experience required.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the specialized compounds, equipment, methods, and procedures used in institutional or industrial laundry and sanitary maintenance.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of acceptable standards and codes relating to sanitation and safely.
- Considerable knowledge of clothing, textiles, fabrics, and the proper selection, care, cleaning and laundering of garments and linens.
- Considerable knowledge of commercial laundry equipment supplies, methods and procedures.
- Ability to organize and assign work and to analyze complex institutional operating problems and develop effective work methods in clothing, and laundry services.
- Ability to plan programs and procedures for the proper care, issue, control, and accountability of clothing and linens.
- Ability to plan and coordinate institutional and regional laundry programs.
- Ability to train, supervise, and instruct staff and operating personnel.
- Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
