Definition
Under the direction of a supervisory official in the Department of Corrections, has charge of a designated AgriIndustries location(s) and/or satellite facility(s) and oversight of related agricultural activities; does other related work as required.
Examples of work
- Consults with supervisory officials, Administrators, Business Manager, and/or the Food Service Supervisors in an effort to determine the agricultural needs of the department/institution(s) and make recommendations.
- Plans and develops suitable work programs.
- Supervises the assignment, instruction and performance of work of employees, inmates and/or residents in fertilizing and cultivating the soil; in producing, harvesting, and storing crops; in operating greenhouses, cold frames and nurseries; in caring for lawns, flower beds, shrubberies, trees, and orchards; in maintaining grounds, driveways and areas around the facility buildings; in caring for dairy herds, cattle, work stock, swine, beef, and poultry; in operating, adjusting, repairing, and maintaining automotive and other farm operating, machinery and tools of varied types; and in safety and sanitation of procedures.
- Allocates acreage for special crops and other uses.
- Supervises work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
- Supervises the work involved in maintaining installations and buildings, including the sanitation of barns, stables, milk houses, pens, poultry houses, roots cellars, and vegetable storage facilities.
- Prepares estimates of personnel, equipment, materials, fertilizers, seed supplies, and other needed supplies; and prepares requisitions for equipment, materials and supplies.
- Prepares requisitions for equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Maintains records and files.
- Prepares essential reports and records.
- Receives, reviews, and compiles information and data from subordinate staff reports concerning varied phases of the farm's agricultural activities and production reports.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Four years of experience in farm management, one year of which shall have included responsibility for the oversight of staff and agricultural activities as a supervisor or lead worker.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the science and art of agriculture.
- Knowledge of the problems associated with a moderately large farm unit using skilled and unskilled staff and inmates.
- Knowledge of the methods used to plan and organize farm operations.
- Ability to plan, organize, and oversee activities, including the preparation of soils, planting, tilling, harvesting and storage of farm crops; the breeding and care of livestock and poultry; and spraying and harvesting of fruits and berries.
- Ability to supervise the use, maintenance, repair, storage and utilization of farm machinery and equipment.
- Ability to locate and utilize the most effective methods, materials and techniques in improving the fertility for the soil, and in controlling insect and other pests and diseases.
- Ability to determine the possibilities and limitations of an institutional farm and make the most effective use of available personnel equipment, material and supplies.
- Ability to assign and instruct individuals and groups of employees, residents and/or inmates and supervise the performance of their work.
- Ability to supervise those measures required to ensure the safety, custody, control and progress of patients and inmates assigned to farm work.
- Ability to develop and implement individual plans of work for the varied divisions of farm activities, including dairies, the stock farms, the vegetable and flower gardens forage crops, and other related agricultural activities.
- Ability to ensure that crops are properly harvested and stored.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative statistical, progress and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to maintain the essential records and files.
- Ability to read, writes, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
