Definition

Under direction of supervisory staff, performs work involved in growing various types of plants in and about a greenhouse; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Screens, sterilizes, and mixes composite soil and places it in flats.
  • Seeds flats with flower/vegetable seeds.
  • When seedlings are large enough, takes them out of the flats and pots them in flats and/or pots placed in cold frames.
  • Plants stock plants in the fields.
  • Propagates flowers for cutting, forces bulbs, pots and transplants plants, and grows bedding plants for use on the institution grounds.
  • Mows laws.
  • Trims shrubs.
  • Tends flower beds, weeding grass areas and flower beds.
  • May drive trucks, cars, and other mechanized equipment for plowing snow in winter and for hauling work around the garden.
  • Trims, transplants, and sprays trees.
  • Sees that proper temperatures are maintained in the greenhouse.
  • Fires greenhouse boilers.
  • May assign and instruct patients, inmates, students, and/or employees engaged in greenhouse and related work.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains records.
  • In the NJ Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire training classes.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in growing plants under greenhouse conditions.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of preparation of soil to be used in growing plants.
  • Knowledge of tools/equipment used in growing greenhouse plants
  • Knowledge of flowers/plants useful for cutting and decorative purposes.
  • Knowledge of various fertilizers/manures and their uses, advantages, and limitations.
  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used in mowing laws, trimming shrubs, tending flower beds, and keeping grounds in a neat/orderly condition.
  • Knowledge of problems which arise in planting, cultivating, weeding, and harvesting flowers/vegetables.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral/written directions.
  • Ability to organize work, analyze greenhouse problems, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to trim, transplant, and spray trees.
  • Ability to prepare soil for growing of plants.
  • Ability to grow various kinds of plants including flowers to be used for cutting purposes
  • Ability to make effective use of equipment/materials used in growing greenhouse plants, and to make proper use of fertilizers/sprays.
  • Ability to force bulbs and pot/transplant seedlings and plants.
  • Ability to fire boilers and maintain proper temperatures within the greenhouse.
  • Ability to assign and/or instruct work of inmates, patients, students, and employees.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
