Definition
Under the direction of a supervisor in a psychiatric hospital, institution, or a State College, has charge of the operation and maintenance of the grounds, gardens, greenhouses, roads, and parking lots; supervises the operation of heavy equipment; does other related work. Examples of work
Plans the work program for operation and maintenance of extensive grounds, gardens and greenhouses; formulates work procedures. Directs the preparation of soil, planting of seeds and seedlings, cultivating, spraying, dusting, harvesting and storage of crops. Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees. Directs the preparation of compost soil, seeding of flats with flower and vegetable seeds, spotting of seedling in flats, and the delivery of flowers. Supervises greenhouse work and directs the starting, potting, cutting and issuance of potted plants to the institution. Directs weeding and thinning of bedding stock, propagation of trees, shrubs and perennial plants in the nursery, planting and care of new lawns, pruning of trees and shrubs, mowing, weeding and care of lawns, and the trimming of hedges. Supervises tree surgery and other grounds work. Assigns and instructs employees and patients and/or inmates assigned and supervises their custody, safety, and work performance. Supervises the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as backhoe, bulldozers, draglines and power shovels, front-end loaders, dump trucks and snowplows. May supervise the construction, planting and general maintenance of a therapy garden planned for the well being and therapeutic treatment of patients. May have charge of the development, care and maintenance of a park or forest area. May have charge of the proper maintenance of garages, parking areas and equipment. Supervises the proper disposal of rubbish. Oversees the servicing, maintenance, painting and repair of the greenhouse, grounds and garden tools and equipment. Supervises the unloading of vegetables and fruits. Oversees snow and ice removal operations. Supervises the storing, safeguarding, distribution and proper use of equipment, materials and supplies. Prepares reports. Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files. Supervises building and maintenance of roads and parking lots. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of supervisory experience in large-scale operation and maintenance of grounds, gardens, and/or greenhouses.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the problems involved in planning and supervising large scale grounds keeping, gardening, or greenhouse. Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in grounds, garden, and greenhouse and related programs. Knowledge of the problems involved in supervising employees, patients or inmates assigned to the unit. Knowledge of the therapeutic values of garden work for patients. Ability to plan work programs for the operation and maintenance of grounds, gardens and greenhouses. Ability to provide instructions to employees, patients or inmates and supervise the performance of their work. Ability to direct grounds, garden, greenhouse and other work programs and routines. Ability to maintain equipment and tools in working order. Ability to keep garage areas, driveways and park areas clear of snow and ice. Ability to assume responsibility for the safety, custody, welfare, and work of assigned patients and/or inmates. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
