Definition
Under supervision, has primary supervisory responsibility over miscellaneous semi-skilled industrial or crafts work; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises a group engaged in the repair of upholstery, mattresses and ticking; cutting, sewing and mending of dresses, linens and clothing; repairing shoes and leather goods; operating printing presses; binding books and pads; collecting, weighing, counting and recording laundry received and distributed.
- Develops effective work methods.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promotion, demotion and/or disciplining of employees.
- Approves the handling of raw materials and finished products.
- Supervises inspection, warehousing and distribution.
- Trains subordinates in the proper use and maintenance of equipment, tools and machines.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Keeps simple records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in semi-skilled industrial or crafts work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems involved in semi-skilled industrial production and/or crafts work.
- Knowledge of the methods involved in simple repair and maintenance.
- Ability to supervise simple, semi-skilled industrial and/or crafts work.
- Ability to give assignments and instructions to patients, employees, students and others.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to see that work areas are kept in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
- Ability to see that equipment is properly used and kept in good repair.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
