SOCIAL WORKER 1

Definition

Under direction of a supervisory official in a state department, hospital, training school, research unit, or agency, is responsible for the more difficult and complex field and office work involved in conducting varied types of social investigations involving the collection, analysis, and recording of significant social facts, drawing sound conclusions therefrom, and basing appropriate action thereon; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Is responsible for the more complex field and office work in conducting varied types of social investigations.
• Interviews and/or confers with patients and/or inmates, and their families, physicians, and/or others to obtain significant social, economic, medical, and other information.
• Prepares social histories for diagnostic, rehabilitative, and/or research purposes.
• Cooperates and assists with the planning, implementation, and carrying out of a program of case work services with the client's family and others; provides or receives information helpful to the client.
• Schedules and visits the homes and families of patients to obtain their cooperation with the comprehensive treatment program.
• Visits prospective employers and others to develop an understanding of the problems of individual patients, and to alleviate potential and actual environmental friction.
• May be required to provide consultation and guidance to Social Worker Trainees or Social Worker 2's.
• Prepares and maintains case histories.
• Prepares reports containing findings and recommendations.
• Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties.
• Establishes and maintains essential records and files.
• Schedules and visits local communities and the homes of patients and confers with families, employers, police officers,teachers, parole and probation staff, physicians and other persons in order to obtain needed background information.
• As required, conducts individual and/or group conferences with assigned patients and tape records such sessions.
• In connection with specific research programs and projects, interviews, occasionally using a tape recorder, patients, their families, and others; complies extensive data to utilize as a basis for preparing analyses and statistical summaries.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Social Work.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in social case work, which shall have involved the responsibility for gathering and analyzing social information from clients, the determination of their needs, and the planning and administration of treatment plans geared toward the needs of individual clients.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of modern social work theory, practices, procedures and of the methods and principles of social work administration. Knowledge of the problems likely to be encountered in doing social work with clients having varied backgrounds and problems. Knowledge of the community, family, social, economic, health, and other problems and forces influencing clients. Knowledge of the public and private social, welfare, health, and educational agencies and organizations. Knowledge of modern social work literature and terminology, and of current social, economic, and community problems. Knowledge of the methods and principles of modern social service work, including general and specialized case work services and their relationship to the development and administration of policies and standards. Ability to read and interpret the laws and regulations affecting parole and apply them to specific situations. Ability to make essential contacts with institutions officers, school authorities, families, paroled children, police departments, and others interested in or concerned with the specialized services of the agency. Ability to provide guidance and instruction to Social Workers of a lower grade. Ability to collect, tabulate, and analyze basic social data and to devise appropriate social and other plans for disturbed, deficient, and/or delinquent children under the care of the agency. Ability to determine the need for and to provide consultation services in the broad field of social work. Ability to comprehend the economic, social and emotional problems of persons who are physically and/or emotionally maladjusted or dependents, or who are confined in a institution. Ability to work effectively with associates, superior officers, professional, and clerical employees, and the representatives of civic, health, welfare, and other organizations interested in or concerned with the broad field of social welfare or in the several specialized fields. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the units within the department and with other organizations, groups, agencies, and individuals engaged in the provision of service to clients. Ability to function as the representative of the department and the agency as may be required, and to attend and participate in professional and lay meetings and conferences. Ability to keep abreast of new developments and trends of thought in the field of social welfare. Ability to prepare correspondence relevant to the consultation programs and services of the component. Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of clear, sound, accurate, and informative statistical and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
