Examples of work
- Carries out program planning, coordination, control and evaluation of a program of services and activities for senior citizens involving a foster grandparent relationship with mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed individuals.
- Serves as the project's regional administrator of personnel and as such, is required to establish work standards, develop wage and salary recommendations, conduct regular performance evaluations and be responsible for the implementation of operating policies within the region.
- Is responsible for administration of training programs within the region involving both staff and foster grandparents.
- Serves in a consulting capacity to administrative staff of host institutions within the region in dealing with internal problems relating to the Foster Grandparent Program.
- Develops an evaluation system to assess the effectiveness of the various program components.
- Carries out various phases of general public relations work of the Foster Grandparent Program, including giving talks and preparing informative materials and reports designed to interpret the functions and responsibilities of the program. Deals with all informational media.
- Develops and maintains narrative and statistical program records and reports.
- Is actively involved with community organizations and aging programs to enhance the total program effort.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Participates in and organizes staff conferences, regional meetings and seminars.
- Prepares extensive official correspondence and maintains essential files and records.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in sociology, education, or psychology.
Experience
Three years of full-time supervisory experience in a program involving senior citizen volunteer programs.
A Master's degree in any of the disciplines stated above may be substituted for one year of experience.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Wide knowledge of the psychology of individual behavior, human-growth and development and the impact of group relationships.
- Wide knowledge of and familiarity with the rules, regulations, policies, operating procedures and standards of programs for the mentally retarded.
- Considerable knowledge of and familiarity with the techniques useful in developing and supervising a comprehensive program of services to senior citizens.
- Considerable knowledge of and familiarity with supervisory and training techniques, equipment and materials useful in carrying out programs of staff development.
- Ability to organize and coordinate assigned programs and technical work, analyze the problems which are likely to arise in supervising Foster Grandparents and develop appropriate operational and functional procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff and local community offices.
- Ability to draft correspondence in the course of official duties.
- Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
