Definition
Under direction of a manager or other supervisory official in a state department, exercises supervision over the Central Motor Pool, and performs the administrative work involved in coordinating on a State-wide basis, the storage, servicing, maintenance and repair of all state owned or leased motor vehicles and related equipment; does other related work.
Examples of work
Develops and implements procedures and programs to advance the repair, maintenance, servicing, storage, fuel economy, and overall efficiency of the Central Motor Pool. Maintains and utilizes lines of authority and communication throughout the Central Motor Pool to ensure that established procedures and programs are fulfilled. Observes and reports on general operations of the motor pool; notes problems and other matters requiring correction. Supervises the work operations of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates. Provides recommendations regarding replacement vehicles, including accessories, special features, and fuel economy. Inspects vehicle storage facilities for compliance with internal procedures; prepares reports and recommendations. Provides recommendations for total loss and replacement for vehicles damaged in accidents. Participates on the Accident Review Board to assist in determining degrees of responsibility and collection action whenever State vehicles are involved in an accident. Prepares detailed reports and correspondence. Supervises the maintenance of records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related unit.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair. Knowledge of the methods used to coordinate the storage, service, maintenance and repair of a motor vehicle fleet. Knowledge of supervisory techniques. Ability to supervise the activities of inter-related operational units. Ability to provide recommendations for the loss and replacement of damaged vehicles. Ability to inspect vehicle storage and related facilities. Ability to coordinate the activities involved in the storage, service, maintenance and repair of a motor vehicle fleet. Ability to work harmoniously with others. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to supervise the maintenance of records and files. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Nine (9) years of professional experience in a motor pool operation consisting of multiple regional facilities which shall have included responsibility for all aspects of the maintenance, service, repair, and parts inventory of the fleet, two (2) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and five (5) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, two (2) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
