Definition

Under the direction of a supervisor in the Department of Labor, performs highly complex or technical paraprofessional functions, and/or supervises Technical Assistant 1, supporting and relieving professionals of routine tasks and duties; does related work as required.

Examples of work

Relieves supervisory officer of administrative detail and other related matters. As required, conducts formal and informal training sessions to orient Technical Assistant 2's to the methods, procedures, and practices used by the unit concerned in order to achieve desired goals. Resolves complaints by answering inquiries from correspondence or telephone calls. Participates with professional staff in the conducting of investigations, task forces, special studies, innovative projects and when required prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. When assigned, reviews operating procedures, and the implementation of changes and revisions. May operate various office machines used for the preparation of reports, records, and correspondence. Coordinates the gathering, compiling, assembling, analyzing, and interpreting of data required by the supervisory officer or professional staff in completing assigned tasks. Participates in the preparation of research needed for technical reports, and correspondence. As required, prepares informative reports for supervisory officer and/or professional staff from current literature and periodicals pertaining to operation of the unit. Functions, when assigned, as a liaison to groups and organizations interested in various department programs and services. Assigns work and gives direction, when required, to Technical Assistant 1, explaining the prescribed and discretionary aspects of the tasks, procedures, and performance requirements based on assessment of work flow and worker's capability in order to insure that the worker understands the assignments, responsibilities, degree of authority, and accountability so that work is done properly, promptly, smoothly, and efficiently. Assists in the compilation of statistical and other data required in records and reports. Supervises the survey of office needs in relation to equipment, materials and supplies; may prepare purchase orders and requisitions to obtain such needed materials. Coordinates the scheduling of unit facilities for testing, training, conferences, and staff meetings. Maintains the essential records and files. Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluation and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees. Reviews schedules, employees performance, and production reports and routine statistical reports for errors and inconsistencies and recommends necessary adjustments. Receives requests for routine statistical data and information pertaining to the unit and sees that these are processed correctly without undue delay. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Education

Completion of 60 semester hours at an accredited college.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in a public or private agency involved in assisting professional staff with the gathering, assembling, interpreting, and recording of factual data of a complex or technical nature.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of the problems encountered in coordinating the collecting, appraising, and interpreting data. Ability to acquire knowledge of Department rules, regulations, and policies. Ability to read, understand and communicate a variety of interrelated written technical and non-technical written instructions such as rules, guidelines, policies, results, and routine statistics. Ability to gather, assemble, organize, interpret, and record factual data. Ability to give assignments and instructions to subordinates and supervise the performance of their work. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to implement modern office methods in the work unit. Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret, and apply basic laws and regulations of the Department. Ability to receive and, when possible, adjust complaints.
