Definition
Under the direction of the Executive Director in the New Jersey Historical Commission, New Jersey Department of State, plans and is responsible for implementation of research programs, scholarly programs, grant-in-aide programs, and other related programs of the Commission; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Administers the research programs of the Commission as Research Director. Administers the Commission¿s annual Grant-in-Aid program for projects, mini-grants, and other grant programs. Administers the annual New Jersey History Conference. Plans and executes the Commission's in-house research projects. Writes, edits, and prepares historical materials for publication. Supervises the Commission¿s Oral History Program. Plans and administers scholarly programs that present current and new research techniques to the public. Coordinates Commission services to persons, organizations, and agencies engaged in research, public programs, and education in New Jersey history. Recommends plans for the Commission¿s programs and projects. Prepares grant applications to federal and private funding agencies for support of the Commission¿s activities. Supervises staff assigned to Commission projects in the research associate's area of responsibility. Supervises work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending hiring, promotion, termination, and disciplinary action to the executive director. Maintains essential records, reports, and files. Prepares reports and correspondence. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Requirements
Education
A Master's degree in a history-related field such as Archeology, Womens studies, American studies, African Studies, Hispanic Studies, Asian studies, African American studies, Latin American studies, History Preservation, Public History, or Museum Administration.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in historical education, museum administration, or curatorial responsibilities, or researching, writing and/or editing historical information.
License
Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in NJ.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of current principles, standards, and techniques of scholarly historical research, writing, and editing. Knowledge of scholarly historical writings and publications about New Jersey. Knowledge of the work of historical agencies and organizations in the field of New Jersey history. Ability to direct, coordinate, and conduct scholarly historical research. Ability to write, edit, and prepare historical publications according to professionally established academic standards. Ability to speak clearly before groups of patrons, historians, and organizations when representing the New Jersey Historical Commission. Ability to work effectively with state agencies and public/private bodies in planning and executing historical projects. Ability to administer financial Grant-in-Aid programs and other funded programs. Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret policies/procedures of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of the position.
