Definition

Under the direction of a supervisory officer in the Department of State, State Museum, supervises the preparation and presentation of Museum exhibits and shows; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

Prepares plans and specifications for exhibits and shows in the areas of fine arts, cultural history, science, archeology and Museum education. Oversees Museum employees involved in the fabrication, installation, dismantling, transportation, conservation, repair and maintenance of permanent, temporary and changing education exhibits. Analyzes nature of projects to be completed; determines the type, quality and quantity of necessary materials and supplies needed for the completion of the project in a timely manner. Maintains an inventory of displays and materials needed for the planning, design and construction of future exhibits. Oversees the work operations of Exhibits Bureau employees involved in the preparation of exhibits. Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees. Assists in the fabrication design for employees in the construction of necessary modules for installation, painting, lighting and exhibit graphics for permanent, changing and traveling exhibitions, and/or exhibit facilities. Coordinates the scheduling and/or renting of vehicles for transportation of art objects, artifacts, scientific specimens and other museum acquisitions. Oversees the operation of State Museum shipping and receiving department. Supervises fabrication of necessary items for implementation of mechanicals and printing reproduction as well as problem solving related to installation. Plans, designs and supervises the construction of collection and/or storage units. Plans, writes and reviews bureau's yearly Projected Budget. Writes and approves bureau's Fiscal Action Requests. Estimates, monitors and maintains the Exhibits Bureau Friends contingency. Maintains blueprints, records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Art History, Museum Studies or other field related to Art.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in the planning and presentation of museum related exhibits, art shows or cultural event exhibits.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of the methods used to handle, prepare, assemble and dismantle museum objects. Knowledge of the methods used to plan and prepare museum exhibits. Knowledge of the materials and equipment used to prepare museum exhibits. Knowledge of the various hand and power tools used to prepare museum displays. Ability to assign, instruct and supervise the work of staff involved in building, repairing, storing and moving museum exhibits and display materials. Ability to use hand and power machine tools safely and efficiently to perform and oversee construction, and develop appropriate work methods. Ability to prepare and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and design visuals for museum exhibits. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those interested or involved in the work of the unit. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to determine the supplies and materials need to complete museum exhibits. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
