Definition

Under the general supervision of the Curator of Education in the State Museum, Department of State, initiates, designs, plans, implements, and evaluates science education programs; initiates, plans, researches, implements, and evaluates education programs for exhibitions; researches funding sources from corporations, foundations, governmental agencies, and individuals; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Creates and presents programs for school groups based on the applicable Core Curriculum Standards of the New Jersey Department of Education, and Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Creates and presents programs for the general public on science subjects; contracts with scholars, scientists, and others to provide programs.
  • Works closely with the other State Museum bureaus to organize and plan exhibitions and resultant education to be used in and outside the museum.
  • Researches, organizes, and writes educational copy for natural history exhibitions.
  • Drafts articles on science education within a museum for publication; prepares manuscripts for publication.
  • Researches sources for outside funding based on knowledge of possible connections between the museum's educational programs and foundations, corporations, governmental agencies, and individuals.
  • Prepares correspondence.
  • Prepares science education and related reports.
  • Establishes and maintains science education records and files.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in the physical sciences or science education.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in a natural science program in an educational setting which shall include teaching and interpretation of science concepts.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the pedagogy of museum or science education.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to classify and identify natural history specimens.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used to plan exhibitions.
  • Knowledge of the field and curatorial techniques of natural history research and their application to specific projects.
  • Knowledge of the value and importance of preserving natural history records and materials.
  • Knowledge of scientific field research techniques, including site investigation, planning and plotting areas for scientific study, and recording and preserving materials in the field and in the laboratory.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with museum staff and outside consultants.
  • Ability to plan lectures, workshops, and courses of various types/levels.
  • Ability to give presentations on natural history matters to various groups.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with those of other museum bureaus.
  • Ability to research funding sources from foundations, corporations, governmental agencies, and individuals.
  • Ability to prepare reports, articles, and other written materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
