Definition
Under direction of a Supervisor of Educational Programs, or an Assistant Supervisor of Educational Programs, executes the lessons and educational experiences of the assigned pupils, class, or classes. Performs these duties exercising independent judgment and with a comprehensive knowledge of department rules, regulations, and policies; at some departments/agencies, may function as a short-term substitute for a Teacher, 3 and 2; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Delivers prepared lessons that utilize a wide range of relevant textbooks, curriculum materials, audio-visual aids, and library resources.
- May prepare lesson plans.
- Participates in the development of an educational philosophy, a curriculum, and courses of study.
- Provides individualized instruction and remedial techniques when the needs of the pupils dictate.
- Prepares informal progress reports on each pupil as directed in the continuous process of pupil evaluation.
- Maintains an attractive, orderly classroom that is well ventilated, well illuminated, and properly heated.
- Instructs and guides pupils to attain the basic objectives of the educational programs.
- Observes pupils and formally and informally measures their growth.
- Utilizes teaching techniques based on individual differences of pupils.
- May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in a setting which provides direct services to clients who are non-ambulant, or who are semi-ambulant and/or have severe physical disabilities.
- Meets with parents whenever needed to discuss pupils' progress and evaluation.
- Coordinates recommendations of various disciplines and other professional members of the interdisciplinary committee with an educational prescription for each pupil.
- Differentiates pupils' instruction according to their abilities.
- Participates in education department meetings and professional development.
- Provides leadership and training to new teachers, para-professionals and education department volunteers.
- Attends pertinent professional courses, conventions, seminars, and workshops to maintain the highest level of professional competence.
- Uses appropriate technology to communicate with peers, administration and students.
- Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Possession of a valid Standard Certificate issued by the State Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education with an endorsement in subject area(s) determined appropriate by the Appointing Authority.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
