Definition

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Educational Programs or Assistant Supervisor of Educational Programs, plans, executes, and evaluates the lessons and educational experiences of the assigned pupils, class, or classes. Performs these duties exercising independent judgement and with a comprehensive knowledge of department rules, regulations, and policies; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Maintains up-to-date lesson plans, cumulative pupil records, and evaluative data.
  • Plans a balanced curriculum that aims to develop pupils physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
  • Prepares lessons that utilize a wide range of relevant textbooks, curriculum materials, audio-visual aids, and library resources.
  • Participates in the development of an educational philosophy, a curriculum, and courses of study.
  • Provides individualized instruction and remedial techniques when the needs of the pupil dictate.
  • Formally evaluates the educational progress and achievement of each pupil under his/her assignment on an annual basis, or more frequently as needed.
  • Prepares informal progress notes on each pupil monthly, or more frequently as necessary in the continuous process of pupil evaluation.
  • Writes Individual Education Plans and/or the education portion of Individual Habilitation Plans for each pupil under their assignment, and implements educational programming as prescribed for each pupil.
  • Coordinates recommendations of the Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and other professional members of the inter-disciplinary committee with the educational prescription for each pupil.
  • May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in a setting which provides direct services to clients who are non-ambulant, or who are semi-ambulant and/or have severe physical disabilities.
  • Maintains an attractive, orderly classroom that is well ventilated, well illuminated, and properly heated.
  • Confers with the psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse, speech therapist, remedial reading teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, learning disability specialist, and other supportive personnel through individual conferences and multi-disciplinary meetings to provide for the maximum development of each pupil.
  • Follows academic policies and curriculum.
  • Develops and tracks benchmarks for measuring student success.
  • Helps students maximize their learning potential.
  • Meets with and listens to concerns of students on a regular basis.
  • Encourages, guides and assists student leaders.
  • Meets with students and parents/guardians on a regular basis for problem resolution.
  • Enforces discipline when necessary.
  • Provides an atmosphere free of any bias in which students can achieve their maximum potential.

  • Attends pertinent professional courses, conventions, seminars, and workshops to maintain the highest level of professional competence.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Possession of a valid NJ Standard Teacher's Certificate or Permanent Endorsement, issued by the Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education, authorizing instruction in subjects areas appropriate to the teaching assignment, as determined by the head of a particular school or district.

Experience

Thirty-six (36) months of full-time, properly certified teaching experience in an approved school, earned after the receipt of the New Jersey Standard Teacher's Certificate.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
