Examples of work

• Inspects buildings, bridges, swimming and boat docks, foot bridges, foot trails, electrical, water, sewers and gas lines to note hazardous conditions, malfunctioning and broken fixtures, appliances, equipment and structures, and other significant conditions; ascertains the nature and extent of needed repairs; analyzes, determines and obtains the personnel required to accomplish the needed work; and sees that the repair work is completed.
• Develops realistic work programs for other employees assigned to maintaining buildings, grounds, electrical lines, water lines, sewer lines, foot and boating docks, target and field archery ranges, rifle range, sewer pumping station, sewage disposal station, covered wagons, teepees, roads, drainage ditches, culverts, fences, signs, assists and instructs their, and supervises the performance of their work.
• Supervises and performs the painting of wood, metal, and cement walls, floors and ceilings of the interior and exterior of buildings, docks, bridges, fences, gates and signs; supervises and performs the staining and varnishing of the interior and exterior of buildings and of household furniture, canoe paddles, rowboat oars and other equipment.
• Supervises and performs the installation of electrical equipment and maintenance of primary and secondary electrical lines.
• Supervises and performs preventative maintenance on vehicular and mechanical equipment.
• Helps plan and design new buildings and/or projects, remodeling, additions, alterations, etc.
• Prepares drawings and estimates materials for unusual loads or stresses figures the size timbers needed to support such loads or stresses.
• Figures heating requirements for furnaces or electric heat.
• Figures main line and branch circuits and size and capacity of entrance switch for electricity.
• Figures size of waterlines and sewer lines if other than an ordinary installation.
• Figures requirements and plans and lays out water and sewer systems and electric lines.
• Prepares estimates of personnel and material costs needed for specific projects.
• Performs minor surveying and prepares maps showing boundary lines, roads, buildings, utility systems, water and sewer lines, etc.
• Supervises and performs housekeeping tasks such as cleaning shower houses, latrines, cabins, and dormitories, washing windows, hanging curtains and making up beds. Supervises and performs the cleaning of other buildings when called upon.
• Establishes and maintains an up-to-date file system of plans of buildings, sewer, gas, electrical and water lines.
• Assists in the recruiting and interviewing of prospective maintenance department employees.
• Prepares supervisor's accident investigation reports for injured employees.
• Supervises and performs the pickup and removal of trash and garbage.
• Supervises and provides a chauffer to operate the school's forty-four (44) passenger school bus.
• Supervises and performs the removal of snow from roads, trails, paths, steps, and lake ice skating area.
• <b>REQUIREMENTS Experience</b>
• Three years of experience in varied types of buildings' maintenance work, or as a general contractor in the construction and/or alteration of household and institution buildings and which shall have included at least one year of supervisory responsibility.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

<b>Extraordinary Duty</b>

The Supervisor of Maintenance School of Conservation or his standby, is on call twenty-four hours a day in the event of an emergency.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the problems encountered in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment and varied types of buildings and structures.
• Considerable knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used in establishing, maintaining, and developing effective work programs for subordinates engaged in varied types of maintenance work and/or alterations or additions to existing buildings or new construction work.
• Considerable knowledge of planning and designing new buildings and additions or alteration to existing buildings and/or structures.
• Ability to assign and instruct employees assigned to physical plant and program equipment maintenance work, addition or alteration to existing buildings or structures work, new construction work and supervise the performance of their work.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance work on vehicular and mechanical maintenance equipment.
• Ability to make and execute plans for the effective utilization of available funds, staff, equipment, materials and supplies.
• Ability to prepare estimates of personnel and materials needed for specific projects and costs.
• Ability to work harmoniously with associates and with groups and individuals engaged in or concerned with building maintenance work, additions or alterations to existing buildings or structures work, new construction work, vehicular preventative maintenance work, program equipment maintenance work and mechanical maintenance equipment work.
• Ability to requisition, safeguard, store, issue, record, properly use and supervise the proper use of available equipment, materials, tools and supplies.
• Ability to prepare factual reports.
• Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files of equipment, materials, supplies, repairs made, work done and time spent.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
