Definition
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Academic Laboratories, provides assistance to faculty and students in utilizing the facilities and equipment of the Academic Laboratory; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Receives, distributes, and maintains control of laboratory supplies and equipment. Prepares set-ups for laboratory classes and experiments. Provides assistance to faculty in laboratory instruction. Enforces laboratory safety regulations and conducts periodic inspections to insure that safety standards are being complied with. Institutes and receives periodic inventories of equipment and supplies. Plans and implements working schedules for laboratory employees. Maintains essential records and files. Prepares correspondence as required. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the equipment and supplies used in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Environmental Studies, Marine Science and Geology experiments. Knowledge of the types of equipment and techniques used in academic laboratories in natural sciences. Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations. Ability to work with students in an educational environment. Ability to maintain inventory and control of supplies and equipment. Ability to supervise both regular and part-time student workwers. Ability to prepare reports and masintain essential records. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in the administration of a multi-purpose science laboratory. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-referenced professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
