The NJ parole officer exam
By NJ Civil Service Navigator Editorial Team · Updated July 12, 2026
New Jersey hires parole officers through the Parole Officer Recruit title, tested by the Law Enforcement Examination. Here is what the job is, what the exam covers, and how the title progresses.
New Jersey does not hire directly into a Parole Officer title. The entry point is Parole Officer Recruit, a competitive law enforcement title under the State Parole Board, and it is tested through the Law Enforcement Examination.
This trips people up when they go shopping for study material, because a "Parole Officer" exam book is written for a job title New Jersey does not fill at entry level. What New Jersey tests you on is the LEAB.
Before you buy a police exam book, read this. New Jersey does not give the traditional municipal police test that most mainstream police exam guides were written for. It gives the Law Enforcement Examination, which is built on the Law Enforcement Aptitude Battery. The LEAB tests cognitive ability, not memorized police procedure.
Two of its three parts, the Work Styles Questionnaire and the Life Experience Survey, cannot be studied from a book. They are not knowledge tests, and no guide will change your score on them. Only the Ability Test rewards preparation.
What the job actually is
Parole officers are sworn law enforcement. They carry, they have arrest authority, and they are in the PFRS pension system. The work is supervision of people released from custody: home and employment checks, conditions enforcement, and the judgment calls that come with both.
Progression
Parole Officer Recruit leads to Senior Parole Officer, which is a promotional title and is not LEAB-tested. There is also a Youth Justice Commission variant of both, which is a separate assignment rather than a separate career.
