Becoming a municipal police officer in New Jersey means passing the Law Enforcement Examination, not the traditional police test. Here is what it covers, the residency and age rules, and what preparation is worth doing.

Municipal police officer is the most searched-for law enforcement title in New Jersey, and the one where candidates are most likely to prepare for the wrong exam.

New Jersey does not use the traditional police test. It uses the Law Enforcement Examination, which is a cognitive aptitude battery. Memorizing penal code sections and radio procedure will not help you, and a great many books on the market are built around exactly that.

Before you buy a police exam book, read this. New Jersey does not give the traditional municipal police test that most mainstream police exam guides were written for. It gives the Law Enforcement Examination, which is built on the Law Enforcement Aptitude Battery. The LEAB tests cognitive ability, not memorized police procedure.

Two of its three parts, the Work Styles Questionnaire and the Life Experience Survey, cannot be studied from a book. They are not knowledge tests, and no guide will change your score on them. Only the Ability Test rewards preparation.

The rules specific to municipal police

Residency preference. Many municipal announcements give preference to residents of the municipality that is hiring. On a competitive list this is often decisive, and it is worth checking before you assume a neighboring town's exam is equally worth sitting.

Maximum hiring age. Municipal police officer carries an upper age limit for appointment. If you are near it, the announcement cycle is not something to wait out.

Veterans preference. Applies, and is added after a passing score. It cannot rescue a failing one.

Then the list, then the academy

Passing puts you on an eligibility list. Appointment comes from that list, and then the police academy, which is its own selection process with a physical standard the written exam does not touch.
