Definition
Under direction of the Assistant Hospital Administrator, Section Chief, Program Coordinator, or other mental health professional in a psychiatric/geriatric facility in the Division of Mental Health and Hospitals, Department of Human Services or in the Division of Veterans' Administrative Services, Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, as a part of the treatment team performs clinical nursing; provides clinical consultations, and participates in the education of nursing staff; does other related work.
Examples of work
- Performs clinical work with patients including individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, family therapy, and related patient education programs.
- Provides clinical consultation and education to groups through weekly problem-centered meetings, dynamic group sessions with nursing supervisor, staff nurses, and ward staffs.
- Gives consultation to teaching programs within the facility, lectures to student nurses or staff, and acts as a resource person at clinical conferences.
- Participates with other clinical staff with regard to patient program evaluation.
- Develops meaningful relationships with patients by observing, evaluating, and interpreting interaction process between patients and nursing personnel.
- Conducts patient group therapy, works with families, acts as consultant to staff, and community agencies.
- Utilizes and modifies social milieu to facilitate achievement of treatment goals.
- Uses problem centered approach in teaching nursing personnel clinical skills.
- Analyzes group process and guides nursing staff and students to develop awareness and skills in meeting patients needs.
- May conduct or participate in research activities.
- Participates in inservice educational programs and formal and informal educational activities for members of other disciplines.
- Acts as a resource person to administrative staff for improvement of the quality of Mental Health Services within the facility and the community.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Psychiatric/Mental Health or Geriatric Nursing or graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing supplemented by a Master's degree in Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling and Guidance, Human Development, or related field.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the treatment of psychiatric or geriatric patients.
CERTIFICATION
Appointee must possess or be eligible for certification from the A.N.A. or other nationally recognized certifying agency as a Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric/mental health or geriatric nursing.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of human behavior.
- Knowledge of teaching, counseling, and evaluation principles and techniques.
- Knowledge of trends and community resources for the treatment of the mentally ill.
- Ability to teach, communicate, and work effectively with others.
- Ability to work therapeutically with individual patients or groups of patients.
- Ability to function as a member of the psychiatric team.
- Ability to use problemsolving techniques and participate in research activities.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
