Definition
Under direction, operates data processing and computer orientated equipment to receive, retrieve, enter, and transmit information to local, state, and out-of-state law enforcement and/or other emergency service agencies; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Receives, by radio or telephone, requests for information concerning wanted persons, stolen cars, or escaped prisoners.
- Manipulates a communications terminal keyboard, enters information regarding arrests and crimes into a central computer, and searches computer memory to match current information versus past records for identification purposes and to retrieve previous criminal records.
- Maintains a log of all information received and transmitted.
- Keeps files of escaped prisoners, wanted persons, and stolen cars.
- Utilizes data processing and computer orientated equipment to make entries, inquiries, cancellations, and modifications of files and records stored at the National and State Crime Information Centers.
- Maintains a daily log of all incoming and outgoing teletype communications.
- Receives and answers inquiries from the National and State Crime Information Centers.
- Reviews entries in the crime reporting system to purge old information and check the accuracy and currency of the remaining information.
- Utilizes data processing and computer orientated equipment in receiving and sending messages to state, local, and out-of-state law enforcement agencies.
- Makes entries, inquiries, cancellations, and modifications of records in the National and State Crime Information Center's stolen vehicle file, stolen license plate file, stolen missing gun file, stolen article file, wanted person file, stolen or embezzled or counterfeited or missing securities file, and the stolen boat file for state law enforcement agencies.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform in essential duties of the position.
<b>KNOWLEGE AND ABILITIES</b>
Ability to apply procedures used in receiving and transmitting information to National and State Crime Information Centers and law enforcement agencies.
Ability to apply rules and regulations of the National and State Crime Information Centers to the receipt, storage, and transmission of information relating to the commission of crimes.
Ability to use teletype, CRT, and/or computer terminal or other communication equipment to transmit information and/or enter information into a central computer.
Ability to record information received clearly and accurately.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates, superiors, and others.
Ability to perform related clerical work.
Ability to take proper care of equipment.
Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
Ability to perform repetitive operations without loss of equanimity, patience, or courtesy.
Ability to compile and prepare reports and other statistical data accurately and quickly.
Ability to use terminal computer orientated data processing and communications equipment.
Ability to make entries and to maintain the records of the National and State Crime Information Centers in current condition.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of police information received.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
