Definition
Under direction of a supervisory official in a state department, is responsible for examining, classifying, and recommending special educational programs for pupils identified as having a handicap or disability; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Carries on a program of special education under supervision/guidance of a supervisory official and in conjunction with the school psychologist, social worker, physician, and/or child psychiatrist.
- Confers with other members of school staff such as administrators, nurses, speech therapists, guidance counselors, and classroom teachers, and makes recommendations regarding special educational programs.
- Administers educational evaluations of student learning disabilities, abilities, and capabilities.
- Detects or diagnoses special learning difficulties in terms of mental, physical, environmental, and psychological difficulties.
- Compiles educational diagnosis of abilities and disabilities.
- Determines and recommends methods of instruction such as visual, aural, kinesthetic, tactile, and/or a combination of remedial and corrective techniques.
- Applies to immediate situations the appropriate teaching techniques, learning procedures, and materials.
- Contributes to the accurate understanding of problems and shares the responsibility for solutions.
- Plans remedial programs for individual pupils and adopts specialized measures of guidance and instruction as required.
- Prepares lesson programs directed to the progress and development of children with a learning disability.
- Observes teachers in a classroom and evaluates the teaching- learning relationship.
- Assesses academic progress of pupils, measures changes in behavior, and evaluates teaching methods progress.
- Organizes and defines criteria to measure the prescribed educational program.
- Analyzes interim goals in areas of accomplishment.
- Shares findings with appropriate team and staff members including immediate teachers.
- Attends professional courses, seminars, workshops, and conferences to maintain the highest possible level of professional competence. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university, a standard NJ Teacher's Certificate, and a standard Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant Certificate issued by the NJ Board of Examiners.
Experience
Three (3) years of teaching experience.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of appropriate methods of analyzation relative to the background of students.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
- Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
