Definition
Under close supervision of a Research Scientist 1 (Microbiology) or other supervisory official in the Division Animal Health, New Jersey Department of Agriculture, assists and performs work of average difficulty relating to biological research, testing and data analysis; participates in planning, development, and implementation of testing activities; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Performs research, testing, and analysis activities in specialized field of feed/food safety requiring the application of biological principles.
- Conducts technical, complex studies on special projects and programs.
- Develops technical material such as Standard Operating Procedures, instructions, etc.
- Instructs workers and technicians assigned to assist in conducting laboratory operations.
- Organizes assigned biological work and develops effective work methods for the laboratory.
- Implements various quality assurance and quality control methods and evaluates their effectiveness.
- Cares for, maintains, and properly uses equipment as assigned.
- Prepares clear, sound and scientifically accurate records, reports and/or correspondence containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations of research, tests and analyses.
- May make recommendations for potential research or developmental studies.
- Maintains records, reports, and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in biology or in a related field.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the field of biological sciences or in the application of biological principles to animal health, feed or food safety.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of biological principles of animal health, feed and food safety.
- Knowledge of the data collection and analysis as related to biological research and testing.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control.
- Ability to conduct testing surveys, and to collect and evaluate data.
- Ability to do investigational work in the developmental field, working alone or as a member of a group.
- Ability to organize assigned field and laboratory work.
- Ability to instruct workers and technicians assigned to field and laboratory work.
- Ability to prepare accurate and scientifically sound reports of containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to maintain the essential records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
