Definition
Under the supervision of higher level staff in the Department of Health and Senior Services, performs chemical and/or physical analyses; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Conducts routine chemical analyses utilizing spectrophotometers, fluorimeters, gamma counters, automated analyzers and other equivalently sophisticated instruments. Performs routine wet chemistry and physical tests such as titrations, pH. specific gravity, solids, hardness, color, odor, turbidity, and others under general supervision. Assists professional level staff in sophisticated analyses utilizing gas or liquid chromatography or other highly sophisticated instrumentation. Takes the lead and assists laboratory technicians in receiving, logging, preparing, and analyzing specimens. Maintains supply inventories and reorders material as required. Performs the routine technical functions necessary to ensure the orderly and efficient maintenance and operation of the laboratories. Inserts quality controls in all assays, digests data, and ensures validity of test results. Conducts routine instrumental maintenance checks. Prepares or assists in the preparation of reports. Maintains essential files and records. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Successful completion of (60) semester hour credits at an accredited college, (24) credits of which shall have been in the biological, chemical and/or physical sciences. Successful completion of a certificate program in clinical laboratory technology may be substituted for the above education.
Experience
One (1) year of experience as a technician in a public health, hospital, clinical, or research laboratory performing chemical tests.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of chemistry methodology. Knowledge of acceptable quality control procedures. Knowledge of modern laboratory equipment, reagents and techniques. Knowledge of safety procedures utilized during laboratory practices. Ability to analyze routine chemistry laboratory problems, organize assigned work and develop effective work methods. Ability to take the lead in a group of laboratory workers and oversee the performance of their work. Ability to use and maintain scientific equipment, including pH meters, colorimeters, spectographs, cryoscopes, spectrophotometers (visible, infrared and ultraviolet), densitometers, chromatographic apparatus and automated analytical devices. Ability to conduct routine chemistry laboratory tests and analyses in accordance with established procedures. Ability to prepare accurate reports. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
