Definition
Under close supervision of a supervising engineer title or higher level engineering technician in a state department, institution, or agency, performs various skilled engineering support functions of a technical nature; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Performs the collection, assembly, analysis, manipulation, and recording of data for use in engineering projects and/or use in developing forecasts/projections relative to planning studies.
- Prepares and interprets plans, proofs, charts, maps, and other project plans, and may assist in assembling proposals and other specifications.
- Operates and ensures that proper care is given to surveying equipment, testing equipment, and/or miscellaneous recording devices.
- Operates Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Systems.
- Sets up safety and surveying equipment.
- May be required to carry signs and survey equipment, clear brush and pound stakes, hubs, and rebar.
- Participates in the design of simple features, and performs mathematical computations involved in engineering construction/operations.
- Acts as leader of a party on surveys involved in engineering projects.
- May develop sketches in the field of existing conditions.
- Conducts studies, prepares reports, performs statistical calculations, collects samples, and conducts testing.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- <u>WHEN ASSIGNED TO TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT:</u>
- Gathers, analyzes, manipulates, and arranges traffic and incident data of a technical nature for use in engineering projects.
- Compiles information for inclusion in traffic incident and accident reports.
- Keeps abreast of roadway construction activities and monitors such areas for traffic congestion and recommends traffic diversion and/or detour routes as necessary.
- Monitors and disseminates information relating to emergency and non-emergency traffic conditions and incidents and assesses congestion levels and the severity of incident conditions.
- Coordinates information with others such as transportation agencies, NJ Turnpike, NJ State Police, State and local police, fire/rescue, other neighboring states and contacts the media regarding traffic related incidents and assists in determining how to effectively clear incidents and/or reroute traffic.
- Operates and monitors intelligent transportation systems equipment such as closed-circuit television system and monitors the Department's radio transmissions for traffic information.
- Assists in monitoring field equipment and reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
- Tracks and records traffic incidents.
- Operates motorist information systems such as variable message signs and the 511 system to provide information to the motoring public.
- Compares and checks for accuracy real-time traffic information with daily emergency traffic interference and planned traffic interference reports for use by engineers.
Education
High school diploma and satisfactory completion of high school level courses in basic mathematics which shall have included completion of courses in Geometry and Algebra levels 1 and 2.
Experience
Two (2 ) years of experience performing support tasks involved in planning, surveying, design, inspection, investigation, and/or maintenance of various types of engineering projects or operations.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
