Examples of work
- Assists in the marking and maintenance of the State's coastal waters and inland waterways and lakes, including the placement of stakes, buoys, spars and lights and the locating, marking and reporting of shoal formations.
- Operates hoisting gear, jet pumps and related equipment and materials.
- Performs maintenance work on channel marking equipment and materials.
- Repairs, fabricates and paints various types of aids to navigation.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of patrol and work boats.
- Makes minor repairs on gasoline and marine diesel engines.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the marking and maintenance of coastal waters, inland waterways, and/or lakes.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the equipment, materials, operations and procedures used in the marking and maintenance of coastal waters, inland waterways and lakes.
- Knowledge of safety equipment and procedures used in channel marking and maintenance operations for the protection of employees, equipment and the general public.
- Ability to assistant in the marking and maintenance of the State's coastal waters and inland waterways and lakes.
- Ability to operate hoisting gear, jet pumps, and other equipment used in the placement of channel markers.
- Ability to interpret plans and sketches of field conditions for marking and maintaining the State's coastal waters and inland waterways and lakes.
- Ability to assist in the operation and maintenance of patrol and motor boats.
- Ability to repair, fabricate and paint various types of aids to navigation.
- Ability to assist in making minor repairs on gasoline and marine diesel engines.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
