Definition
Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Radiological Maintenance, Department of Law and Public Safety, maintains, repairs and calibrates radiological equipment for the State of New Jersey and surrounding states; assists County Emergency Management Coordinators regarding radiological defense and response; exchanges radiological equipment as scheduled; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Promotes State Emergency Management Radiological Emergency Response Planning programs with counties and surrounding states.
- Reads and interprets radiological field survey meters to evaluate a radiation hazard, physically surveys the area or materials, measures and estimates the level of radiation involved and predicts the possible changes in material or equipment.
- Interprets the information displayed on the radiation detection instrumentation.
- Exchanges calibrated and maintained kits with counties, states and government agencies as scheduled by the agency and the maintenance supervisor.
- Reconciles State radiological property as previously distributed through the state.
- Maintains a float stock of calibrated radiological instrumentation, organizes and processes client exchanges.
- Maintains inventory on all personnel dosimetry, through the process of zeroing, reading and calibrating in compliance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology practices and procedures.
- Checks the operability of radiological equipment by maintaining, calibrating and repairing field survey equipment and diagnosing circuit boards to component level for faulty equipment.
- Utilizes electronic testing equipment including: oscilloscopes, digital multi meters, ohm meters, volt meters, pulsers, electrometers and function generators to diagnose electronic problems with the radiological field survey instruments.
- Complies with appropriate safety regulations when handling radioactive material using ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) practices in accordance with practices and procedures as stated in the Federal Regulations governing Nuclear Regulatory Commission Title 10 Part 19 and 20; collects wipe samples of radioactive sources for analysis and interprets data using laboratory materials and procedures.
- Ships and receives radioactive material in accordance with procedures set forth by the Federal Regulations governing Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC Title 10 CFR Part 71.
- Measures through mathematical calculations the rate of decay, of radioactive isotopes and prepares official reports.
- Maintains electronic records, files and documents for State, County and other client records.
- Submits transfer, inventory and repair reports as required for client exchange.
- Assumes responsibility for the operations and security of the laboratory facility in the absence of the supervisor.
- Assists in training new employees on proper laboratory procedures.
- Will be required to learn to utilize and train others on the various types of electronic and/or manual recordings and computerized information systems utilized by the agency, industry and other offices and operations units in the performance of official duties.
Education
Successful completion of an Associate's Degree that includes or is supplemented by eighteen (18) semester hour credits in electronics and/or radiation physics.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in work involving radiological testing, including the calibration, maintenance and repair of electronic test equipment, one year of which shall have included working on the implementation of radiological plans or programs in a radiological facility.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of the objectives and functions of the Federal Emergency Management Radiological Standards and Emergency Response Planning Directives.
- Knowledge of the objectives and functions of a calibration laboratory and its relationship to the overall function of a Radiological Emergency Response Planning Unit.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in radiation detection.
- Knowledge of radiological instruments and their proper usage.
- Knowledge of health physics, safety practices and regulatory guidelines related to the operation of a calibration laboratory.
- Knowledge of radioactive source handling techniques, instrumentation, radiation safety, licensing procedures, personnel protection and exposure regulations.
- Knowledge of the techniques used to operate radiological survey instrument, electrometer, signal generators, carbon monoxide indicator, gas flow proportional counters, air samplers and portal monitors.
- Knowledge of procedures for calibrating a Radiological Survey Instrument, Electrometer, Oxygen Meter, Combustible Gas and Oxygen Meter, Gas Flow Proportional Counters, and Air Samplers
- Knowledge of the schematic symbol system.

- Knowledge of the procedures and precautions for warehousing, storage and dispatching of radiological equipment and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret laws, rules regulations, and governing radiation practices in the work place, and apply them to specific situations.

- Ability to perform mechanical operations involving disassembly and adjustment of mechanical devices and supplies.

Applicants who possess the required eighteen (18) semester hour credits in electronics and/or radiation physics, but who do not possess the Associate's degree may substitute additional experience for the remainder of the education on a year-for-year basis.
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Manufacturing, Chemistry, Radiation Sciences or Physics which includes or is supplemented by twenty-two (22) semester hour credits in electronics and radiation physics may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
Appointees will be required to learn to operate a forklift during the working test period.
After appointment, continued employment in this position will be contingent upon the employee's knowledge and ability to handle critical radioactive materials and be utilized in accordance with the standards of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, however, any removal or separation of a permanent incumbent because of this reason is appealable before the Department of Personnel Merit Board.
