Definition

Under supervision of a Supervising Stock Clerk or other supervisor in a state department, institution, or agency, either assumes the responsibility for a designated section of a large supply unit or takes the lead over a small number of stock clerks engaged in receiving, unloading, unpacking, sorting, issuing, shipping, delivering, and recording equipment, materials, and supplies of varied types; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Organizes assigned or other stock work and develops effective work methods.
  • Assumes the responsibility for maintaining a designated section of the stock room or area.
  • Takes the lead in giving instructions to Stock Clerks and other employees assigned to the unit.
  • Helps with unloading and unpacking shipments from trucks and/or freight cars.
  • Checks incoming shipments for conformity with orders and specifications and sees that stock is in good condition.
  • Sees that the stock bins and racks are kept supplied according to size, color, or other description and that sufficient quantity of stock is on hand at all times.
  • When requisitions are received, assembles stock for order, and prepares it for shipment.
  • Sorts and delivers packages, mail, and other items.
  • Delivers packages, mail, and other supplies and equipment by use of a motor vehicle.
  • Checks orders being packed for delivery for quality, proper packing, and sufficient postage.
  • Sees that the stock areas are maintained in a clean, orderly safe, and sanitary condition, including floors, shelves, bin, and racks.
  • Takes periodic inventories.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains a set of stock record cards.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in work involving receiving, storing, and recording parts, materials, and supplies of varied types in an organized storeroom.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of storage procedures and methods. Knowledge of stock record keeping methods and procedures. Knowledge of transportation, shipping, and packing methods. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations. Ability to provide guidance and instruction to employees of the unit. Ability to operate and drive a motor vehicle to make deliveries or pickups. Ability to take the lead in unpacking, unloading, storing, sorting, labeling, and recording incoming stock of varied types and to check the quality and quantity of stock received against orders and specifications. Ability to see that the bins, racks, and shelves are kept filled. Ability to read and understand a road map to find locations within the state. Ability to receive requisitions and see that stock is assembled for filling order, that proper records are kept thereof, and that the requested stock is properly packed for delivery and/or shipment. Ability to assist in the taking of periodic inventories. Ability to do simple clerical work and to prepare simple reports. Ability to assist in maintaining a set of stock record cards. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
