Definition
Under the direction of a supervisor in a State department, institution or agency, supervises a group of employees engaged in the overhauling and repairing of machinery and equipment and the maintaining, repairing and reconstruction of buildings and other facilities. Supervises staff and work activities. Prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does other related work.
Examples of work
- Inspects and determines the extent and type of work to be done and develops effective work methods.
- Assigns work, gives written and/or oral instructions to employees assigned to the work of the unit and supervises the performance of their work.
- Supervises and takes the lead in the repairing of trucks, snow plows, pumps, motors and other machines and equipment.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Supervises the repair and reconstruction of buildings, shelters and other forest and park facilities, including benches, tables, tent platforms and signs.
- Supervises and takes the lead in the cutting and laying of stone for foundations, retaining walls, culverts, fireplaces and for other purposes.
- Supervises the painting of the interior and exterior of buildings and facilities.
- Supervises the maintenance of electrical wiring and appliances.
- Supervises the installation and repair of water supply lines, pipes, comfort stations, sanitary facilities and plumbing equipment.
- Supervises the maintenance, repair and construction of grounds, paths, trails, roads, parking areas and picnic areas and campsites.
- Orders, stores, safeguards, issues, records and supervises the use of equipment, materials, tools and supplies.
- Prepares reports and records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, time and work completed.
- In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire-training classes.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Requirements
Three (3) years of experience in work involving carpentry, masonry, painting and/or other types of repair and maintenance work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the operation, adjustment and maintenance of trucks, snow plows, pumps, motors and other types of machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in the repair and reconstruction of buildings, structures, shelters and other forest and park facilities and furnishings.
- Knowledge of the varied types of paints and their application.
- Knowledge of the precautions to be taken and the methods to be used in maintenance and repair of electrical wiring and appliances.
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of water supply lines, pipes, comfort stations, sanitary facilities and plumbing equipment.
- Ability to supervise assigned staff and plan, organize and implement projects within the unit.
- Ability to organize repair and maintenance work and to develop effective work methods.
- Ability to give written and/or oral directions to the employees engaged in the work of the unit and supervises the performance of their work.
- Ability to supervise and take the lead in maintenance and repair work, including: the repair and maintenance of trucks, snow plows, pumps, motors and other types of machinery and equipment; the repair and reconstruction of buildings, structures, shelters and forest and park facilities such as benches, tables, tent platforms and signs; the cutting and laying of stone for foundations, retaining walls, culverts and fireplaces; the painting of buildings and facilities; the maintenance and repair of the painting of buildings and facilities; the maintenance and repair of electrical wiring and appliances; the installation and repair of water supply lines, pipes, comfort stations, sanitary facilities and plumbing equipment; and the construction, maintenance and repair of grounds, paths, trails, roads, parking areas, picnic areas and camp sites.
- Ability to order, store, safeguard, issue, record and supervise the proper use of equipment, materials, supplies and tools.
- Ability to maintain the records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, costs, time and work completed.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
