Definition

Under the limited supervision of a Master Aviation Mechanic or other supervisory official in a state department, agency or institution, performs those functions relevant to the analysis and correction of malfunctions in turbine powered aircraft; performs inspections and maintenance operations on powerplant and airframe components according to procedures mandated by aircraft manufacturers and Federal Aviation Administration standards; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

Analyzes the causes of malfunctions and unsatisfactory performance in aircraft components and systems, and initiates corrective procedures. Inspects, repairs, maintains, and replaces functional powerplant and airframe systems and components, according to prescribed preventive maintenance program; conducts the necessary adjustments, repairs, and replacements of parts as deemed necessary. Tracks and balances all rotating components in order to prevent destructive vibrations. Analyzes levels of vibration including engine components in order to determine premature part failure due to imprecise vibration level. Conducts static balancing of dynamic components in order to track and balance rotating parts of the aircraft. Accompanies pilot to conduct in-flight monitoring procedures; performs post-flight inspections. Completes all airframe and powerplant inspections prescribed by Federal Aviation Administration and aircraft manufacturer; makes appropriate entries in maintenance logs. Oversees the installation of radio equipment and components by radio technicians. Successfully completes training courses sponsored by aircraft and engine manufacturers. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of helicopter and/or fixed wing aircraft, airframes, turbine powerplants and related components and systems.

License

Applicants must possess a valid Federal Aviation Administration approved Airframe and Powerplant certificate considered 'recent' by the following standards set forth in the Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65, Section 65.83: A certificated mechanic may not exercise the privileges of their certificate and rating unless, within the preceding twenty-four (24) months -- (a) The Administrator has found that they are able to do that work; or (b) Has, for at least six (6) months -- (1) Served as a mechanic under their certificate and rating; (2) Technically supervised other mechanics; (3) Supervised, in an executive capacity, the maintenance or alteration of aircraft; or (4) Been engaged in any combination of paragraph (b) (1), (2), or (3) of this section. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of computerized digital engine control systems. Knowledge of hydro-mechanical fuel control systems. Knowledge of dual digital automatic flight control systems. Knowledge of integrated electronic flight instrumentation, flight director systems. Knowledge of flight management, and global positioning navigation systems. Knowledge of traffic collision and avoidance systems, multi-bus DC and AC electrical systems. Knowledge of environmental control systems, engine fire detection, and suppression systems. Knowledge of retractable landing gear, dual braking systems, emergency flotation, and evacuation systems. Knowledge of forward looking infra-red radar imaging systems, computerized engine control diagnostic systems. Knowledge of computerized vibration analysis systems. Knowledge of single, and dual hydraulic systems. Knowledge of emergency medical equipment and air ambulance medical component systems. Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical and fuel systems, pertaining to turbine-powered aircraft. Knowledge of the concepts applicable to the functions of hydraulics, electrical and fuel systems, aircraft sheet metal and woodworking components, propeller, weight and balance referencing flight/quality theories and airframe construction. Ability to read and understand information in technical manuals and guides distributed by the manufacturer and other aviation services. Ability to identify and analyze causes of malfunctions. Ability to repair and replace complete assemblies and subassemblies. Ability to plan/schedule sequence of work operation and utilize proper tools and materials on aircraft. Ability to comprehend and apply sophisticated instruments for monitoring temperature, vibration, tracking and balancing, hydraulic and electrical systems, and engine functions. Ability to successfully complete prescribed Federal/State training courses. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
