Definition
Under direction of a supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, improves and maintains the physical condition of state property primarily by performing routine manual work; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- May assist with and makes the simpler repairs to plumbing, electrical wiring, fences, fireplaces, roofs, tables, benches, and other property.
- Cuts wood and grass.
- Clears trails.
- Cleans camp sites, picnic grounds, trails, and beaches.
- Disposes of trash.
- Controls erosion.
- Builds fire lines.
- Plants and transplants trees.
- Transplants and cares for seedlings.
- Trims trees, shrubbery, and sprout growths.
- Builds and repairs dams, bridges, septic tanks, and French drains.
- Paints the inside and outside of buildings.
- Does simple masonry work.
- Sharpens tools.
- Erects and repairs posters and signs.
- Operates all types of power equipment including bulldozers, power shovels, front-end loaders, trucks, and snow plows.
- Trains assigned employees and may act as lead worker within a group of employees, seasonal employees, and/or inmates assigned to maintenance work.
- Prepares simple reports.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the maintenance of forests and/or parks or in general maintenance and repair work involving a variety of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, masonry, and/or related tasks.
License
Appointee may be required to obtain a NJ Certified Pesticide Applicator's or Operator's permit in the required categories.
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of procedures and equipment used in construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to do construction, maintenance, and repair work on buildings and grounds.
- Ability to cooperate with coworkers and to be courteous to all.
- Ability to train assigned employees, seasonal employees, and inmates, and to oversee their work.
- Ability to operate varied types of power equipment after a period of training.
- Ability to prepare simple reports.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
