Definition
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Educational Programs, or other supervisory official, plans, executes and evaluates lessons and educational experiences of assigned pupils, class, or classes; performs these duties exercising independent judgment and with a comprehensive knowledge of department rules, regulations, and policies; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Maintains up-to-date lesson plans, cumulative pupil records, and evaluative data. Plans a balanced curriculum, which aims to develop pupils physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Prepares lessons that utilize a wide range of relevant textbooks, curriculum materials, audiovisual aids, and library resources. Participates in the development of an educational philosophy, curriculum, and courses of study. Provides individualized instruction and remedial techniques when the needs of the pupils dictate. Conducts formal evaluations of each assigned pupil's educational progress and achievement on an annual basis, or more frequently if necessary. Prepares informal progress notes on each pupil monthly or more frequently as deemed beneficial, to support the ongoing evaluation process. Develops individual education plans and/or educational components of individual habilitation plans for each assigned pupil and implements the prescribed educational programs accordingly. When required, may coordinate recommendations from personnel and other professional personnel concerning the educational prescriptions for each pupil. Instructs and guides pupils to attain basic objectives of educational programs. Observes pupils and formally and informally measures their growth. Utilizes teaching techniques tailored to individual pupil differences while guiding them according to their unique abilities. Regularly participates in educational department meetings with the supervisor of educational programs and colleagues. Attends pertinent professional courses, conventions, seminars, and workshops to maintain the highest level of professional competence. Performs additional student supervisory duties to enhance student safety and engagement, including overseeing lunch periods, non-instructional periods, field trips, after-school activities, assemblies, and other assigned responsibilities. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Possession of a valid New Jersey Teacher's Certificate (Standard, Emergency or Provisional Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing or Certificate of Eligibility) or Permanent Endorsement, issued by the Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education, authorizing instruction in subject areas appropriate to the teaching assignment, as determined by the head of a school or district.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of Individual Education Plans and/or the education portion of Individual Habilitation Plans. Ability to engage and motivate students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to follow academic policies and curriculum. Ability to prepare lesson plans and courses of study for the educational development of pupils. Ability to communicate with peers, administration, and students. Ability to provide individual instruction and remedial techniques when the needs of the pupil dictates. Ability to appropriately enforce discipline when necessary. Ability to instruct and guide pupils. Ability to evaluate the educational progress and achievement of each pupil under his/her assignment. Ability to meet with students and parents/guardians for problem resolution. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
