Definition
Under direction during an assigned tour of duty, has charge of correctional programs and staff within an adult county correctional facility or institution; supervises subordinate officers or other personnel on a shift; may perform specialized, administrative/security police work as assigned; performs other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises subordinate officers or other personnel as assigned by the Captain or other superior officer.
- May perform specialized, administrative/security tasks as assigned.
- Assists assigned officers with complex assignments and/or difficult inmates.
- Prepares schedules for county correctional police officers and county correctional police sergeants, takes roll call each morning and ensures proper work assignments are being followed.
- Ensures adequate levels of staffing on all shifts, especially in cases of employee absences.
- Instructs assigned officers regarding correction work techniques, methods and objectives.
- Assists in developing procedures to facilitate employee training, use of weapons, chemical restraining agents and other safety and emergency measures.
- Assists in developing security plans for the facility, including access, issuance and use of keys, weapons and other equipment.
- Interviews and screens applicants for county correctional police officer positions and makes recommendations regarding appointments.
- Serves in the absence of any superior officer.
- Assists in instructing officers regarding principles, practices and terminology of correctional and penological methods.
- May supervise squads of officers directing a group of inmates in performance of work such as farming, cooking, or maintenance.
- Prepares written reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Supervises the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- Manages the work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience
Two (2) years of supervisory experience in work involving the custody or protection of individuals.
License
Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems encountered in work involving rehabilitation, care and custody of persons deprived of their liberty and related law processes.
- Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
- Ability to instruct assigned officers regarding correction work techniques, methods and objectives.
- Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to assigned officers and other employees.
- Ability to understand the various issues concerning inmates who are deprived of their liberty.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement.
- Ability to conform to official and unofficial requirements relevant to laws, conduct and behavior.
- Ability to perform specialized, administrative/security police work as assigned by the facility administrator.
- Ability to organize supervisory work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to prepare and maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License and applicable endorsement for the class and type of vehicle being operated. The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
<b>AGE:</b>
Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.
<b>CITIZENSHIP:</b>
Must be a citizen of the United States.

<b>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:</b>
Appointees must have successfully completed a police training course approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Such training includes successful attainment of a satisfactory level of proficiency in the use of firearms.
Appointees will be required to qualify/requalify in the used of firearms in accordance with State of New Jersey regulatory requirements.
Appointees appointed to positions in SWAT, SERT or related units must additionally qualify quarterly in the use of all weapons used by the unit.
<b>NOTE: MEDICAL EXAMINATION</b>
Appointees may be required to pass a thorough medical examination administered by the appointing authority. Any medical or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of duties of the position, cause appointee to be a hazard to himself/herself or other, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties, will be cause for rejection. Appointees may be required to undergo a psychiatric examination. Failure to demonstrate sufficient capacity to perform duties of this position may be cause for rejection.
