Definition

Under direction during an assigned tour of duty within an adult county correctional facility or institution, supervises the day-to-day operations, activities and staff responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks in support of the safety, security and welfare of inmates, facility personnel and visitors; may assist with the more difficult assignments and/or inmates; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Trains, assigns, instructs, schedules, supervises and formally evaluates the work of subordinate officers.
  • Maintains care, custody and control of inmates in accordance with established policies, rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Prepares daily work schedules for assigned officers, ensures adequate shift coverage and approves overtime as required.
  • Conducts roll calls and briefings.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of correctional programs.
  • Recommends improvements to operating procedures and/or processes.
  • Supervises and/or conducts cell and dormitory searches in ccordance with established policies, regulations or procedures.
  • May assist with the transport of inmates to and from other facilities, court appearances, off-premise medical appointments, emergency medical treatment facilities and court-issued programs and clinics.
  • Instructs and reminds subordinate staff of policies, directives, procedures, standards and practices.
  • Instructs subordinate officers on changes and/or revisions to policies, directives, procedures, standards and practices.
  • May operate emergency vehicles as directed.
  • Investigates various inmate related incidents, alleged violations of policy, irregular or suspicious occurrences, etc.
  • Attends formal classes and receives instruction on the principles, practices and terminology of correctional concepts involving penology methods and programs.
  • Reviews, prepares and processes a variety of reports related to facility operations.
  • Supervises the maintenance of essential records and files.
  • May assist with investigations and/or the exchange of information between federal, state, county, and/or municipal authorities by receiving, transmitting, and preparing records and reports.
  • May supervise or participate in activities involving the classification of inmates and/or the coordination of inmate records.
  • May perform all duties of a County Correction Officer as required.
  • May be assigned to supervise a squad of offices directing a group of inmates in the performance of work functions such as farming, cooking or maintenance.
  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in work involving the custody or protection of individuals.

License

Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, practices and procedures involving the operation and security of an adult correctional facility.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws concerning correctional facility operations.
  • Knowledge of the issues and problems likely to be encountered in work involving the rehabilitation, care and custody of persons deprived of their liberty.
  • Ability to enforce facility rules and keep order.
  • Ability to deal firmly and tactfully with inmates.
  • Ability to think and respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow orders and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to provide supervision, training, instruction and guidance to subordinate offices and evaluate their work performance.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in a wide array of situations.
  • Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Ability to supervise the maintenance of essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated. The responsibility for ensuring that employees posses the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

<b>AGE:</b>

Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.

<b>CITIZENSHIP:</b>

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Applicants for this position must submit acceptable proof of meeting the above indicated requirements.

<b>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:</b>

Appointees must have successfully completed a police training course approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Such training includes successful attainment of a satisfactory level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

Appointees will be required to qualify/requalify in the use of firearms in accordance with State of New Jersey regulatory requirements.

Appointees to positions in SWAT, SERT or related units must additionally qualify quarterly in the use of all weapons used by the unit.

<b>NOTE: MEDICAL EXAMINATION</b>

Appointees may be required to pass a thorough medical and psychological examination administered by the appointing authority. Any medical, psychological or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of the position, cause the appointee to be a hazard to self or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties, will be cause for rejection. Appointees may be required to undergo a psychiatric examination. Failure to demonstrate sufficient capacity to perform duties of this position may be cause for rejection.
