Definition

Under direction during an assigned tour of duty within an adult county correctional facility or institution, serves as liaison between the Sheriff and/or Undersheriff or Warden and/or Deputy Warden and all officers in a large county correctional institution; performs other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Acts as liaison between the Sheriff and/or Undersheriff or Warden and/or Deputy Warden, all officers and other employees.
  • Gives special instructions to assigned officers regarding correction work techniques, methods and objectives.
  • Monitors the activities of inmates and prison staff, education and social service professionals working in the institution to ensure adequate security of the facility.
  • Participates in the classification of newly arrived inmates.
  • Assigns cells and/or dormitories to inmates.
  • Prepares work and study assignments.
  • Serves in the absence of any superior officer.
  • Prepares written reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • May coordinate inmate programs such as inmate work release programs or education programs.
  • Supervises the establishment of essential records and files.
  • Manages the work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Three (3) years of supervisory experience in work involving the custody or protection of individuals.

License

Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

  • Knowledge of problems encountered in work involving rehabilitation, care and custody of persons deprived of their liberty and related law processes.
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
  • Ability to give special instructions to assigned officers regarding correction work techniques, methods and objectives.
  • Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to assigned officers and other employees.
  • Ability to understand the various issues concerning inmates who are deprived of their liberty.
  • Ability to observe and note significant facts and conditions.
  • Ability to remain calm and make rational decisions in unusual circumstances.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement.
  • Ability to deal with difficult and unusual cases.
  • Ability to handle individual cases and avoid fear and antagonism.
  • Ability to conform to official and unofficial requirements relevant to laws, conduct and behavior.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronics and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsement for the class and type of vehicle being operated. The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

<b>AGE:</b>

Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.

<b>CITIZENSHIP:</b>

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Applicants for this position must submit acceptable proof of meeting the above indicated requirements.

<b>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:</b>

Appointees must have successfully completed a police training course approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Such training includes successful attainment of a satisfactory level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

Appointees will be required to qualify/requalify in the use of firearms in accordance with State of New Jersey regulatory requirements.

Appointees to positions in SWAT, SERT or related units must additionally qualify quarterly in the use of all weapons used by the unit.

<b>NOTE: MEDICAL EXAMINATION</b>

Appointees may be required to pass a thorough medical and psychological examination administered by the appointing authority. Any medical psychological or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of the position, cause the appointee to be a hazard to self or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties, will be cause for rejection. Appointees may be required to undergo a psychiatric examination. Failure to demonstrate sufficient capacity to perform duties of this position may be cause for rejection.
