Definition
Under the direction of the supervisory officer in the office of Environmental Analysis within the Office of the Commissioner, Department of Environmental Protection, Supervises and coordinates biological field teams for the Tidelands Mapping Project, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 13:1b-13.2 and 13.3; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Prepares and supervises the work of three two-man field teams.
- Plans field trips for the checking of vegetation signatures on aerial photography.
- Identifies plant species in New Jersey marshes, particularly those below mean high water.
- Identifies vegetative signatures on aerial photography.
- Identifies marsh areas necessary for tide gauging.
- Identifies height and extent of tidal influence.
- Field checks delineation of areas below mean high water.
- Prepares documentation on vegetative signatures and tide gauging.
- Prepares technical evidence and serves as an expert witness for the State.
- Maintains essential files and records.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.
Experience
Three (3) years of professional experience involving marsh biology, one year of which shall have included interpretation of aerial photography and one (1) year of which shall have included supervisory responsibilities.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Thorough knowledge of New Jersey marshes and their vegetation.
- Thorough knowledge of tide gauging techniques.
- Thorough knowledge of Riparian Law.
- Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of biological field teams.
- Ability to interpret black and white, color and color infrared photography.
- Ability to plan field trips for the checking of vegetative signatures of aerial photography.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Ability to correlate tidal data with vegetative signatures to determine plants species below mean high water.
- Ability to act as a technical witness in court and give testimony under oath.
- Ability to prepare technical reports.
- Ability to maintain essential records.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
