Definition
Under the close supervision of a Research Data Supervisor or other supervisory official in the Department of Law and Public Safety (DL ) Office of Justice Data (OJD), Law Enforcement Professional Standards (OLEPS) or Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC), performs basic research, collects data, schedules report maintenance, and does statistical work in one or more programmatic or investigative areas, utilizing structured and unstructured data from existing reports and resources for statewide business improvement; does all related duties as required.
Examples of work
Assists with researching, compiling and analyzing of structured and unstructured data from new and existing sources. Assists with the design and implementation of data collection protocols to acquire new and existing data through valid, industry recognized methods, including but not limited to surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Assists with the subsequent analysis and reporting of findings. Prepares basic research and statistical reports. Analyzes written and numerical data regarding governmental and organizational problems. Assists with conducting and interpreting descriptive statistical analyses using appropriate software to test research hypotheses and formulate conclusions and recommendations. Assists with the development and evaluation of alternatives, recommendations, solutions, and conclusions or approaches to research problems. Presents findings in verbal, written, and graphic form and facilitates discussions regarding findings. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of data analysis methods and techniques including the gathering and collection of structured and unstructured data, as well as general principles, concepts and terminology used in research. Knowledge of time management techniques to provide for efficient prioritization and completion of projects and assignments. Knowledge of data analytical software used to prepare summaries, reports, charts, graphs, and tables. Knowledge of basic arithmetic and statistical techniques used to analyze numerical data. Ability to research, compile, and analyze structured and unstructured data from new and existing sources. Ability to conduct and interpret descriptive statistical analyses using appropriate software to test research hypotheses and to formulate conclusions and recommendations. Ability to prepare research and statistical reports. Ability to analyze written and numerical data regarding general governmental and organizational problems. Ability to present findings in verbal, written, and graphical form and to facilitate discussion of findings. Ability to develop and evaluate alternatives, recommendations, solutions, and conclusions or approaches to research problems. Ability to manage a workload consisting of multiple projects and assignments. Ability to complete work under critical timelines to meet project objectives and deadlines. Ability to be objective and flexible to adapt to changes in priorities and work assignments. Ability to gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of others, collaborate, and work in multidisciplinary teams. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in collecting, analyzing, reporting, and disseminating large volumes of data using statistical techniques to identify trends or patterns in complex data for research projects; including or supplemented by 18 credits in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 18 credits in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a Ph.D. in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
