ACTING COMMISSIONER

A department is run by a commissioner nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. When that seat is empty, or the holder cannot serve, someone is designated to run the department in the meantime, and this is the title that person is carried under.

It is not a job anyone applies for. There is no examination, no eligible list and no specification describing the work, because the appointment is a political one and the duties are simply those of the commissioner it substitutes for.
