Definition

Under limited supervision of a supervising engineer title or higher level technician in a state department, institution, or agency, performs the more technically complex engineering support work and surveys involved in engineering projects; does other related duties as required.

  • <u>WHEN ASSIGNED TO TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT:</u>
  • Guides engineering technicians in gathering, analyzing, manipulating, and arranging traffic and incident data for use in engineering projects.
  • Performs the more technically complex duties relating to engineering support work for traffic engineering projects.
  • Compiles information for inclusion in traffic incident and accident reports.
  • Keeps abreast of roadway construction activities and monitors such areas for traffic congestion and recommends traffic diversion and/or detour routes as necessary.
  • Guides engineering technicians in monitoring and disseminating information relating to emergency and non-emergency traffic conditions and incidents and assessing congestion levels and the severity of incident conditions.
  • Takes the lead in coordinating information with others such as transportation agencies, NJ Turnpike, NJ State Police, State and local police, fire/rescue, other neighboring states and contacts the media regarding traffic related I ncidents and determines how to effectively clear incidents and/or reroute traffic.
  • Takes the lead in operating and monitoring intelligent transportation systems equipment such as closed-circuit television system and monitoring the Department's radio transmissions for traffic information.
  • Monitors field equipment and reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Tracks and records traffic incidents.
  • Operates motorist information systems such as variable message signs and the 511 system to provide information to the motoring public.
  • Compares and checks for accuracy real-time traffic information with daily emergency traffic interference and planned traffic interference reports for use by engineers.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence relating to traffic incidents.

Education

High school diploma and satisfactory completion of high school level courses in basic mathematics which shall have included completion of courses in Geometry and Algebra levels 1 and 2.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience performing support tasks involved in the planning, surveying, design, inspection, investigation, and/or maintenance of various types of engineering projects or operations.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Ability to perform duties requiring physical exertion such as carrying signs and survey equipment, clearing brush and pounding stakes, hubs, and rebar.
